The Menagerie

The world is dark and dangerous. Forts and villages are scattered and the people do what they can to survive. The beasts and monstrosities of the world have taken over. Everyone knows that it was wizards and their magical breeding that eventually led to this near-apocalyptic world. But the people of this world are tenacious and will not give up. The once scattered survivors have begun to band together in settlements. A thousand years ago the peoples of the world were scattered tribes. But once again they have begun to form settlements and safe havens.   The settlements of this land are quite varied as cultures and customs have been created out of superstition and necessity. In some lands, all monstrosities are to be killed on sight ... but few have the power to draw the line between beast and monstrosity. In most lands, domestication of creatures is common and only the most aggressive and wild creatures are met with spear and axe.   How did this happen? Unbeknownst to most of the people of this world, there was a league of wizards who created a site known as "The Menagerie". There they tried to house all of the worlds beasts and monstrosities, allowing them to create any living creature they could imagine. But their creativity had few limits and they quickly created beings far beyond their ability to contain. The creatures eventually broken free and most of the containment cells were opened, spilling the creatures into the nearby lands as well as scattering them across the wizard's thriving teleportation network.
