The Dragon Gods
In The First Age, ancient dragons were first to take residence in The Manylands. It is believed that these dragons carved up the landscape into the nations that stand today, with each dragon holding dominion over one territory or other. It is believed the dragons created the first dragon-kind in the Manylands as well, including Dragonborn and Kobolds. It is because of this that many Dragonborn consider these ancient dragons to be Gods - creators of life and the world around them.
Since the founding of the Dragonborn Kingdom of Rachir, The Dragon Gods have been considered the state's official religion, unlike most of the rest of The Manylands that now follow The Eight.
Assets
There are no official places of worship to The Dragon Gods, even in Rachir. Instead, each household commonly holds a bust or statuette devoted to one of the Dragon Gods (in some provinces, this is even enforced). This is in part due to the divisive nature of the dragons themselves: it is said the dragons fought with each other constantly for dominion over the Manylands. This proud heritage manifests in a tribal and fierce loyalty by their followers, often leading to sabotage and sometimes open conflict (if a temple was erected in celebration of Woolfriq, for example, it would soon be torn down by followers of Vord). Some of the oldest architecture still holds recognition to the Dragon Gods however, particularly the Palace of Hurthir and each major town's mausoleum, but in all cases all seven of the Dragon Gods are honoured.Bloodlines
Some of the tribal loyalty to one or the other Dragon Gods stems back to the individual Dragonborn's bloodline. It is believed the first Dragonborn's scales were monochromatic, the colour denoting their Dragon creator, but centuries of interbreeding have resulted in most Dragonborn of the Manylands having scales ranging from burnished brass and yellows to clay-like oranges and browns, with only a few choice scales still reflecting their lineage (if a Dragonborn has a patch or two of black scales, they would be assumed to be descended from Vord, for example). Many that note the colour of these ancestral scales (or Marks as they are more commonly known) choose to follow their assumed ancestral God. In Rachir, tradition holds that the Dragon God you follow is designated to you at birth - as if that Dragon has placed their mark upon you - though some now break with that tradition, instead following a Dragon God based on principle. The Seven Dragon Gods
Each of the Dragons left their mark on the world and followers believe their influence can still be felt, whether in the pride of devout Dragonborn, in the atmosphere and the landscapes of the world, or in the behaviours of those that follow in their footsteps.Riklaw "The White Storm"
Despite his name, it is debatable whether Riklaw was a white or silver dragon, a bone of contention which his followers still squabble amongst themselves over more than debating with followers of other Dragon Gods. Riklaw was believed to have a mood that changed like the wind, making him entirely unpredictable. He could seem docile and content one moment, before exploding in rage the next. It is believed that this tempestuous nature caused to him scour the breadth of the Manylands, never truly finding a home of his own until most of the other lands had already been claimed. Disciples of Riklaw believe his true home to be in the remotest part of The Great Ice Reef, as the only of the Dragons who could tolerate the abysmal cold.Salas'sen "The Quiet Death"
Opportunism is at the heart of the green Dragon God. It is said that she used her impressive magical gifts to steal modern day Irthiski from Woolfriq, and proved impossible to get rid of. Her noxious personality was only exceeded by the fumes that permeated around her lands, a much more passive way of holding dominion than would be demonstrated by the other Dragon Gods. Legend tells that Salas'sen was the only of the Dragon Gods to use lizardfolk to do her bidding, something that the other Dragon Gods viewed as abhorrent, resulting in her being shunned. Even Ushtarg, some say, left her alone during The War of the Dragons her lands proving undesirable, inhospitable and impregnable. Secretive to a fault, followers of Salas'sen believe the green Dragon God possessed a kind of foresight to ward her from future harm, though few have been able to emulate even a modicum of those powers.Terran "The Fierce"
The mother of Rachir, the bronze Dragon God stood as a beacon of enterprise. Though debated by some, it is widely accepted that she created the first Dragonborn in The Manylands, as a means to help her cultivate the land for its natural resources, one of the reasons she claimed the mountainous peninsula of modern day Rachir and Burakrin. It was Terran who first warned the other dragons of Ushtarg's treachery during The War of the Dragons , lighting up the sky by calling lightning to her. Terran is honoured in the official flag of Rachir, depicting her claw holding aloft a halberd - the signature weapon of the Dragonborn Kingdom.Ushtarg "The Deceiver"
The most ambitious and treacherous of all the Dragon Gods, the great red dragon Ushtarg first began plotting the conquest of the Manylands from his throne in Kothar. One by one, he betrayed and slew the other dragons, taking their lands for his own until nearly all of the Manylands was under his control. It is said that even the elves of Ansrivarr had to swear fealty to the great dragon in order to be spared, that being the only reason the Empire of Fallen Stars survived the conquest. Long into The Second Age Ushtarg reigned, though his passion for dominion waned, his ambitions were diverted to harnessing an even greater power, so the legend says. But eventually he was quelled by the joint forces of the Manylands, a unified army from The Crow Flies, dwarves from their mountains in Provincia and Burakrin, wood elves and gnomes from Laranlas, even a contingent of dragonborn rebels from Rachir. His last stand was in modern day Rain Fire in Rachir, where he was finally subdued, his body crashing into the river. Out of all the Dragon Gods, none is more feared than Ushtarg. Following his death, worship of Ushtarg was given to be a sign of corruption and deceit, and he was officially renounced as a Dragon God after The Ushbek Occupation, where devout followers of the red dragon temporarily overthrew the Dragonborn Kingdom. Ushtarg's dreadful presence can still be felt in modern day Kothar, a barren wasteland scorched by Ushtarg's flames. Ruins of his once capital of the Manylands still exist, but only few are brave enough to search this cursed land for lost treasures, save for The Red Mages.Vord "The Vindicator"
The black Dragon God has been characterised as being aggressive but just. Every land she claimed was won through fair battle, for none of the dragons could best her in combat. Her corrosive acid breath was said to have melted the mountains in the North West, forming plateaus that would eventually become Orruskan and Provincia. It was Vord's dragonborn that first utilised weaponry, including the halberd which is now synonymous with dragonborn tradition. It is even said that Vord created two armies, pitting one against the other so that she could train in strategy and ultimately have the strongest force remaining. Her renown made her a clear target of Ushtarg "The Deceiver" during The War of the Dragons but was ultimately undone through Ushtarg's trickery. Had it been a fair fight, so claim her followers, Vord would have held dominion over the Manylands, not the deceitful red dragon.Woolfriq "The Sky Warden"
A lover of the wild, it is said that the blue Dragon God planted the first seeds that formed both Litrix Forest and Winter's Forest, as well as introducing the strange creatures that still thrive there. Woolfriq was known to spend weeks soaring the Manylands, acquiring a great army of wyverns to accompany him, as well as keep watch over his domain - the land now known as The Crow Flies and Irthiski. Legend tells that Salas'sen covetted the land herself, poisoning the lands in the East. To avoid her pestilence spreading, it is said Woolfriq implored Riklaw for aid, resulting in the Loex River making its way down from the icy north, separating the infected land from his.Xesk "The First"
Though little is known about the gold Dragon God, it is believed that he was the first to appear in the Manylands, some even claim him to be the father of the rest of the brood, though any familial relation between the Dragon Gods is fervently disputed. Wilder stories say that his presence could separate clouds and that his fire burned a brilliant white light that would blind his foes. It is believed that Xesk was even more powerful than the great red Ushtarg, keeping him confined to modern day Kothar from his seat in Isk. But by all accounts, for reasons unknown, Xesk left the Manylands, taking to the sky and never being seen again, leaving the way clear for Ushtarg to initiate The War of the Dragons . Some believe Xesk ascended to a higher plane, being the first of the dragons to become a God, others that he left The Manylands for another world entirely, whilst a few claim that Ushtarg murdered Xesk in his sleep and took his body back to his lair in Kothar. Regardless, Xesk followers characterise him as a symbol of honour and hope, whilst the superstitious believes he brings you good fortune.Worship
There is no formal clerical organisation behind the worship of the Dragon Gods, since an individual's connection to the Dragon Gods is considered entirely personal, but traditionally all members of a family will follow the same Dragon God, though there are exceptions. Despite the privacy associated with worship, it is notable that each of the Rachiri Clans follows one of the Dragon Gods exclusively, and this has been the case since even before the formation of the Dragonborn Kingdom. In fact, historians attribute this tribal loyalty to their Dragon Gods one of the main reasons for the formation of the Kingdom in the first place - each Clan would fight the other for control of territory, as well as to prove that their Dragon God was the ultimate ruler. In more recent history, worship of Ushtarg "The Deceiver" has been outlawed in Rachir, after Clan Ushbek, devout followers of the red Dragon God, assassinated the King and eradicated the rest of Clan Xarn in what would later be called The Ushbek Occupation. Clan Ushbek was eventually expelled from Rachir, and Clan Ragthrok, cousins of Clan Xarn became the new royal line of the Kingdom.
