Humanity

POPULATION, CITIES, CULTURE   City: Hopeacres, location of the Rose Museum, close to Hope Needles   One of the first inhabitants of Wayn's Rose was the scientist Jasmin Haddar Wayn, who the world is named after. This was because of her momentous discovery of the doorways, not her choice to settle there; though her arrival coincided with the announcement of the name these two events seem to have moved in parallel ignorant of each other; and she was embarrassed by the name. The "rose" of the name was partly poetic, due to the pink sunsets of the planet, and partly due to the Terror Rose, a cliffside monument that was one of the first pre-human ruins discovered on the planet, and brought to human mind a rose.

The ruins

  • Hope Needles - ruin, has towers
  • The Green Lance is an object discovered ten paces from the initial doorway to Wayn's Rose: an object 3 meters long, roughly 10 centimetres in diameter, made of a complex alloy of different metals. It was half-buried in the ground and the aboveground portion was weathered green. It is now the centrepiece of the Rose Museum in Hopeacres.
  • The Terror Rose is a monument on the steep red cliffside of the inland end of the Thrabyl Hills, 500 meters wide and tall, consisting of concentric arcs that bring to human mind a rose flower. (The rose matter accumulation in the brains of psychics, under a microscope, shows similar concentric patterns.) The monument is made of grooves 1 meter wide and deep dug into the mechanically smoothed cliffside, after which they were filled and the cliffside coated with a transparent diamond-like bonded matrix covering. Over time, the lower third of the monument had been covered by loose dirt, now removed; the monument does not quite reach the top of the hill and winds blow dirt over.

Psychics

In 2170, children born on Wayn's Rose began to exhibit psychic powers. This was believed to have a connection to ancient pre-human ruins found there as the powers correlated with being born and raised in their proximity. Regulating these powers took a while; a metal abundant on Wayn's Rose was found to block telepathic intrusions and weaken psychokinetic powers, while certain local plants made for vivid, shared dreams even between non-psychics; to psychics they gave incredible visions. One prominent early psychic was Gail Haddar Murcos (2129--2234), Jasmin Haddar Wayn's granddaughter. (To avoid confusion: the phenomenon was acknowledged in 2170; Murcos and others admitted having suspected it in themselves much earlier. Wayn herself had considered the idea but dismissed it as absurdly unlikely before her death in 2159.)
