Emily Caswell Character in The Magic of Intention & Circumstance | World Anvil

Emily Caswell

Miss Emelia Caswell- Caswell (a.k.a. Emily)

Executive Secretary to the Minister for Magic. Whether she likes it or not.

Physical Description

General Physical Condition

Emily is in excellent physical shape and physical health. She exercises regularly and eats well, though she does have a weakness for greasy American diner food, and pastries.

Body Features

Emily is short, slender, and petite. She is built small and is/was a fashion model.   She is stunningly beautiful, with pale, unblemished skin, a toned physique, flat midriff and delicate bone structure.

Facial Features

Emily's face might be called elfin; she has dark eyes and blond hair and a small, pert nose.

Identifying Characteristics

Emily has let her hair grow very long - almost to her waist - since returning to the wizarding world. She has three piercings in each ear, a pierced navel and pierced nipples. She has refused to remove them for any reason, and wants to get more piercings.   She has a tattoo of celtic knotwork running around her entire waist.

Physical quirks

Emily talks with her hands, so tries to keep them busy when she is talking with someone - unless she's flirting. Then she uses her hands to convey her serious interest.

Special abilities

Though Emily doesn't know it, she has the ability to sense and manipulate ambient magic, making her a(n untrained) sorceress. Given the right training, she would be a powerful sorceress; she is far more gifted in the Lore of Magic than in High Magic, and missed her calling to use these powers.   She also has the potential to be an Enchanter, though this ability is very common among sorcerers.   Emily is also gifted in some of the mind magic disciplines - in her case, she is a low level but highly sensitive empath and, with training, would be a powerful psychometrist.

Apparel & Accessories

Emily is always fashionably dressed; she is on the cutting edge of fashion for both the wizarding and muggle worlds, and spends a lot of time and effort staying that way, even though her access to clothes and money is far less than it used to be.   She often dresses on the edge of modesty for whatever situation she's in.

Specialized Equipment

  • She always has cigarettes and a lighter on her. Always.
  • Bottle of water
  • Cosmetics kit
  • Her purse(s) are an endless void of clothes, makeup, booze, cigarettes, magazines, and other things that are best not listed in public.

Mental characteristics

Personal history

Emelia (Emily) Caswell is the youngest daughter of Cornelius Fudge's younger sister. She's mostly Irish by blood - her mother is half Irish and her father is Irish.   Her immediate family does not share the wealth and status of her Uncle, but are not poor by any means. She was raised as the youngest of four children (three girls and one boy) and grew up somewhat spoiled, but not overly so. She was ten years younger than her next youngest sibling, and was never close to her brother and sisters.   Her mother, Helen Caswell nee Fudge, was the Department Head for the Ministry Office of Records & Information, so she grew up in a family that was very organized, somewhat regimented, and very literate. She was taught to read and write at a very young age, and discvered a passion for journaling years before she attended Hogwarts.   Emily never really got on with the rest of her family, who had little ambition and preferred a very simple, easy and (to her) boring life. She wanted to experience people and the world, and never quite managed   She attended Hogwarts and was sorted into Ravenclaw, though the Sorting Hat certainly had to consider her options. She certainly had ambition, but her ambition was to marry well, become rich, and gain social status. She didn't really want to involve herself in politics, though she wanted to know as much as possible about as many people as possible.   She was a hard worker and got satisfaction from a job well done, but it was not a defining characteristic.   She was Sorted into Ravenclaw because of her curiosity about people, relationships, and what made people do what they did. Her curiosity extended to things that most witches and wizards didn't think about - sex, sexuality, fashion, beauty culture, and the position of women in society.   And since Hogwarts didn't offer courses in these things, she educated herself.   She got a reputation at Hogwarts as being the kind of girl every guy wanted to date. Every guy she dated became a rising star in school in their chosen arena - whether that was academic, athletic, social, or otherwise.   Her choices in romantic partners confused any number of people: she didn't date (just) the most popular, intelligent, or skilled people. She dated people she found interesting or exciting, even if they weren't conventionally attractive, socially skilled, or well liked.   Many people had crushes on her at Hogwarts, but most of them annoyed her or bored her. She often regrets she didn't accept when Bill Weasley asked her out, having seen what he did with his life, she believes she misread him entirely and missed an opportunity.   It was also known she didn't break up with people or give up on people. They broke up with her - most often because they couldn't keep up with her or weren't comfortable with the lengths she would go to or wanted to go to in order to help her partner (or herself) achieve her goals. Her last serious boyfriend broke up with her between sixth and seventh year because he didn't want to be known as someone who dated a girl known for being sexually active and who had no intention of changing who she was to please her partner.   It was whispered and gossiped that she was quite willing to sleep with anyone she dated (and some she was just interested in) by the end of her fifth year. These rumors didn't bother her much because they were true, and she was quietly proud of and quite comfortable with her sexuality.   The constant cycle of failed relationships left her somewhat emotionally bruised and hurt. She never quite got to the point of understanding what was wrong with her that no one wanted to remain with her.   The first half of her seventh year was spent in a series of short, painful relationships where she was basically used for sex. When she tried too hard to turn those relationships from mostly physical to deeper, more meaningful relationships, she was dumped and left to try again.   She became quite scandalous her seventh year at Hogwarts for openly dating a Gryffindor girl after the Christmas holidays. She was quite calm and sanguine at the reactions she had, and refused to hide her relationship or her feelings for her girlfriend.   This socially scandalous decision caused her to be cut out of her family and her mother's life. Her father still occasionally speaks to her, but only on her birthday and Christmas - and even then, not for very long.   Her parents, nor her siblings, have ever forgiven her for her exploits at Hogwarts.   The girl broke up with her right before graduation, having felt her 'brave' journey into a relationship with a girl had run its course.   Emily got into the habit of writing down everything she heard about anyone in carefully enchanted notebooks. Gossip, rumor, theory and her own analysis of their motivations.   After her graduation from Hogwarts, she decided to try an experiment of her own, and moved in with one of her muggleborn friends and spent several years in the muggle world. She studied psychology and sociology and sexuality, and allowed herself to experiment sexually.   She managed to get a job as a fashion model, working with a Spanish model named Isabel Amery who she became very close friends with. Isabel and her husband Richard Amery helped her make her way through the muggle world. Her cover story was that she was homeschooled in rural Britain, but both Isabel and Richard saw through her lies.   Eventually, Emily was forced to admit to Richard and Isabel who and what she was. Isabel and Richard took some convincing in order to believe her, but they eventually did. Emily felt a deep sense of relief when she finally told them about the magical world, and was able to be completely honest with them about her life.   Isabel and Richard all but adopted her as a surrogate daughter. They helped her get muggle degrees in history, sociology, and sexual psychology and shephered her career in the modeling industry.   While most of her friends and (some) of her family are aware of her activities in the muggle world, at least in terms of modeling and college, she kept her (active) sex life a secret from them.   She had the same problem in the muggle world that she had in the magical world: she always ended up being left by a partner she had fully invested in. By the time her twenty-second birthday came around, Emily was disillusioned about relationships and had transitioned completely into short, intense physical relationships and had started quietly using her appearance and sexuality as tools to manipulate and get what she wanted from people.   Isabel disapproved (and Richard didn't know), but she also understood, and quietly hoped the girl would find a person who appreciated her for who she was.   Eventually, the Ministry discovered she had revealed the secret to Isabel and Richard. Emily still isn't sure how this happened, but it did. It took frantic searching and her knowledge of the Ministry to keep Isabel and Richard from being Obliviated.   It turned out their neice, Hermione, was a student at Hogwarts. Given Hermione's connections to the Boy Who Lived, Obliviating her relatives could be the kind of bad press the Ministry didn't want.   But she was ordered to return to the magical world.   Reluctantly, she did.   Around this time, her uncle, the Minister for Magic, had to fire his executive secretary. Not only did she manage to leak information about Sirius Black to the press, but she spoke out of turn about what the Ministry was and wasn't doing.   At the same time, criticism of the Ministry was at an all time high and relations with the muggle world were beginning to fray. Very few in the Ministry knew how to communicate with the muggle government, and they needed a face who could speak muggle.   While being chastised by her uncle for her breach of the Statute, he realized Emily would be perfect for the position of his Executive Secretary. He buried the breach of the Statute of Secrecy and reframed it as her living with and working with muggles who already had a connection to the magical world, implying she was 'training' to be an effective liaison to the muggle government.   She was hired and started work within a week of returning to the magical world. She got an apartment in muggle London, and continued to spend time in the muggle world - but now, it seemed she was being a professional as opposed to a wild child.   Andreil Caine introduced himself to her very soon after she started, having heard that she, too, had persured muggle education. The two talked and had a strong connection and began building a friendship.   Andreil Caine was already friends with her uncle, and was able to make her seem much more competent and loyal as opposed to being a dangerous and somewhat off-kilter whimsical creature.   This helped her build a solid relationship with her uncle. While he didn't take much of her advice regarding many situations until the near the end of 1995, when Fudge began to realize Dolores Umbridge wasn't going to be able to manage the situation at Hogwarts.   Emily quickly developed an intense dislike for and rivalry with Umbridge, and worked very hard to undermine her with both her uncle and Andreil.   Somewhere around March 1996, she decided she was going to seduce Andreil Caine, just for the novelty of having slept with a powerful pureblood bigot.   But she was going to take her time. She started flirting with him and looking into him, finding out more about him. She had already amassed a significant amount of knowledge about people at the Ministry, and started using her network to discover what she needed to know about Andreil.

Gender Identity

Female, with a love of the traditional feminine.

Sexuality

Emily identifies as bisexual, and (once the term became popualrized) would identify as pansexual. She is very interested (both personally and academically) in sexuality and sexual practices, and has made sure to have a wide variety of experiences and partners.

Education

Homeschool

LIke most pureblood children, Emily's education began at home with reading, writing, history and math. Her parents were both well educated and worked in goverment, so she had access to a lot of resouorces other children might not have, and she took advantage of them.   Her intelligence started to show at a young age, and her parents encouraged her to read, study and discover for herself.   She was eager to go to Hogwarts as soon as she could.

Hogwarts School of Witchcraft & Wizardry

Emily was sorted into Ravenclaw and while she was never popular or at the top of her class, she was always near the top and everyone knew who she was. She spent time in the library like most of her house, but she didn't live there.   She was known for her ability to talk to just about anyone about anything, and her habit of writing in her notebooks.   Her reputation for dating, sex, and for academic excellence frustrated many, but she was often considered a 'favorite' of Fiius Flitwick, who would spend hours talking with her. She also grew close fo Poppy Pomfrey.   She never did find a way to get on with Severus Snape, who often made her cry and feel like a failure. His refusal to allow her into his NEWT potions class, despite her OWL scores, is one of her greatest failure, and one of the reasons she didn't get to pursue the career she wanted in Healing.   But his refusal to allow her into his NEWT potions class also set her life on the path she ended up following - which is not the path she wanted. She isn't sure what she's going to do with her life, but she isn't doing what she wanted.

Muggle Education

Emily isn't just smart - she is good at people. Using these skills, she was able to sneak into a public program that got students who needed to get their GCE. She had a steep learning curve, but a lot to learn.   It was here she met Isabel Amery, a fashion model who had almost no formal education. The two women worked together to complete their work, and Emily finished the program with good scores on both O-level and A-level tests and a proficiency with computers and a love of muggle technology.   And a job as a model working with Isabel.

College

Emily was able to finesse her credentials and history by sleeping with a London criminal and his girlfriend a few times. In return, he created an entire muggle record for her. Emily used her own skills with paper and pen (and a bit of magic) to create paper records to go with the digital records.   And at the age of 19, jumped into college.
Birbeck, University of London - Undergraduate

  • BSc in Psychology (focus in sexual psychology)
  • BA in History

Birbeck, University of London - Graduate

Employment

Modeling

Emily worked for several different agencies during her time as a fashion model starting at the age of 18. She worked as a fashion model from 1984-1993, when she was forced to leave the muggle world.   Her work as model ranged widely from pictures for clothing catalogs, ads, fashion shows, artistic photography, nude, and even both soft and hard erotic photography for magazines, photography books and publications.   She was often a model - both nude and clothed - for photography and art classes, and was hired as 'eye candy' for parades, events, galas, and other events.

Ministry of Magic

Emily was hired as Cornelius' Fudge's executive secretary in 1993 and has remained in that position since.

Failures & Embarrassments

Hogwarts School of Witchcraft & Wizardry

  • Despite her OWL scores, Severus Snape did not allow her into his NEWT potions class, citing her 'personality being unsuited to the nature of advanced potions study.

This prevented her from being able to pursue Healing as a career.

Mental Trauma

Relationships

Despite a strong desire to have a committed monogamous relationship with a person she finds fascinating and dynamic, Emily has never managed to avoid being left, cheated on, or otherwise dumped.   She has been publicly humiliated and used for sex.   She has tried polyamory twice, but both times it failed spectacularly, and as of 1995, she has given up on relationships.

Family

Emily considers herself to have very little family in the wizarding world, despite belonging to a large family.
The Caswells
After her public relationship with another girl at Hogwarts in the early 1980s, she was basically disowned by her entire family. She hasn't spoken to her siblings or mother since 1984, and despite several attempts to reach out and reconcile, she has never heard back from them.   Her father has met up with her to exchange gifts on Christmas and on her birthday every year since she returned to the wizarding world, but they've never spoken for more than about fifteen minutes at a time. He is very uncomfortable with her, and doesn't really want to reconnect as much as he doesn't want to lose touch.
The Fudges
Her mother's extended family doesn't acknowledge her very often - only when they have to. While it is somewhat known she is the neice of the Minister for Magic, there really isn't much coverage of her or her position as a secretary.   They do claim her when they have to, and will speak only about her academic accomplishents in the muggle world, and her work with the Minister's office.
Cornelius Fudge
Cornelius Fudge doesn't much approve of his neice's lifestyle or life choices, but he considers her a skilled professional and respects her work. They aren't close outside of work, but at work they are an inseparable team.   Fudge beleives Emily believes hin him and his administration, and she does - some of the time. Other times, she can't believe she's working for the government and helping keep everyone 'in line.'   Pureblood politics disgusts her, muggleborn frustrate her, and she thinks of most people as awkward, bigoted, prejudiced, and generally less intelligent and able than she is.
Isabel & Richard
Emily remains in contact with Isabel and Richard, even seeing them from most weekends. They remain the two people in the world she is closest to, and she misses living with them.   She views them as her parents, and thinks of them as her family, far more than she does her own blood family.   They are the only two people she trusts.

Friendships

Emily has a very hard time trusting anyone. Especially someone who claims to be her 'friend.' She was betrayed by one of her friends at Hogwarts - another girl in Ravenclaw outed her and her girlfriend to the school, because she was jealous.   She and Emily had 'experimented' a couple of times, and she had decided she and Emily were in love and meant to be.   Emily didn't know her friend felt this way, and felt very betrayed when her relationship was put on display for the entire school.   Before that, one of her other friends revealed to everyone that Emily was sexually active with her boyfriends, creating a reputation for her of being a 'loose woman' - a reputaiton that follows her even into the Minister's office.   She has leaned into both the scandals, owning them as best she can, but she is very aware of how much and how fast friendships can hurt someone.   So she doesn't trust, doesn't have 'friends' as much as she has people she spends time with who can or do help her with what little ambition she has left.

Intellectual Characteristics

Curiosity

There is no person Emily doesn't want to know everything about. She loves getting to know people, and is always looking for people who are dynamic, interesting, intelligent, and ambitious. She finds far fewer than she would like.   She loves studying people and culture and learning everything she can. She has turned gossip into an art form, and is very skilled at discerning the truth of rumors.

Academic

Despite a job exploiting her incredible good looks, and a lifestyle exploring her sexuality, Emily is an academic at heart. She studies constantly, and would have continued pursuing more degrees in college if she hadn't been forced to leave the muggle world.   She continues to subscribe to a recieve academic journals and reads as much as she can get her hands on.   She has a huge file of papers and rebuttals she's written on her own, but none of them will ever be published, because she has to hide herself from the muggle world.

Experiential

Emily thinks of knowledge as something to be experienced. She has a running list of things she wants to get to do, but knows most of it is impossible.   She threw herself into various groups she studied in school - the LGBT community, the BDSM community, polyamory, pornography, erotic photography, fashion - all of these things she has experienced for herself.   She is now doing the same with magical culture, and is fascinated by the Old Lore, and hopes for a chance to dive into that, too.

Morality & Philosophy

Pureblood

Emily is a pureblood who has lived in both the muggle and magical worlds and loves both. She doesn't have the prejudice that purebloods are better than muggleborn or halfbloods, but muggleborn witches and wizards constantly frustrate her.   She really wishes they would try to learn more about the culture they are now a part of before deciding to try to change it or impose their views on it.   She also wishes muggleborn would bring certain aspects of the muggle world over into the wizarding world: fashion, sexual liberation, and more varied booze and food.   She finds pureblood bigotry to be absurd and stupid - as much so as other forms of prejudice, but she also feels trapped where she is.
Integration
Having spent time in both worlds, Emily sees that both cultures are unique and powerful and wonderful, but believes they need to remain separate - because muggles would turn wizards into second-class citizens, their powers and abilities legislated, and they would be forced into roles and positions they didn't want.   She is very aware that for all their power, wizards would be wiped out by muggles very quickly if they were viewed as a threat.

Taboos

  • She will not sleep with or flirt with anyone who is married or in a relationship
  • She will not discuss her political positions or thoughts as long as she works for her uncle.
  • She will not discuss her family

Personality Characteristics

Motivation

Emily's motivation is to find a path through life that lets her be happy. So far, aside from the last few years with Isabel and Richard, she has failed in this.   She originally wanted to be a healer (and if she'd had the chance, she may have been one of the few wizarding psychologists or psychiatrists), but Severus Snape dashed those hopes.   Ever since then, she has been looking for where she belongs.

Savvies & Ineptitudes

People Skills

Emily is very able to talk to anyone about anything, and can make anyone feel comfortable and welcome with her. She is a skilled social chamelon, a natural extrovert, and can read a room faster than just about anyone.   She is good at getting people to talk to her and is a very skilled manipulator and is not afraid to use her skills to get what she wants or needs.   She has often discovered that people underestimate her, and she uses that to her advantage.

Food

Emily is a terrible cook and a terrible judge of food. Her judgment about what should or should not be eaten is not to be trusted.

Fashion

Emily has a near preternatural sense concerning fashion. She can read trends and figure out what will look good, no matter what the fashion is - and even when she dresses almost inappropriately, she looks good enough she gets away with it.   Every. Single. Time.

Wine and Spirits

As bad as Emily is with food, she is talented with wine and alcohol. Her tolerance for alcohol is legendary. She can go months - or even years - without drinking and still drink absolutely everyone under the table.   Her knowledge is vast, and she is almost always right.   She once had lunch with Hagrid in Diagon Alley before leaving for the muggle world (she was giving him one of her pets to take care of) and she drank Hagrid under the table.   You cannot outdrink her. Madame Pomfrey thinks she has a magical gift of some kind, but she can't prove it.

(Dis)organization

Her personal appearance is always immaculate. Her workspace is the very model of efficiency and organization. Her notebooks, beauty supplies, and clothes are organized well enough she could be used as an academic study.   The rest of her life is a hot mess. She is a disorganized, in disarray, and is an epic slob.   This wasn't always the case, but she has long since stopped caring.

Memory

Emily's memory is almost good enough to be supernatural and is just a step shy of photographic/eidetic.

Sex & Seduction

She is very good at these things.

Virtues & Personality perks

Emily is honest, warm, polite, and honestly cares about what other people think and feel, and wants everyone to be happy and feel better.   She is a natural encourager, a great listener, and gives amazing hugs and comfort.

Vices & Personality flaws

  • Emily can fall prey to her lust far too easily for her liking
  • Very addicted to nicotine. So very much.
  • Constitutional inability to pass up free food, free booze, or a sale
  • Constitutional inability to successfully manage her money

Personality Quirks

Emily, upon discovering wizards don't suffer most of the ill-effects of smoking, became a connessieur of tobacco and cigarettes and smokes more than most people think is wise.   Emily can tell, at a glance, if two people are sleeping together, ever have slept together, or want to sleep with each other.   Emily has an uncanny knack for spotting lies and dishonesty

Hygiene

Emily's hygiene is never anything short of perfect.

Social

Contacts & Relations

Emily has a network of gossips, shopkeepers, salespeople, former lovers, and people who wnat to be her lover that keep her up to date on everything she needs, wants, or shouldn't know.

Family Ties

Uncle Cornelius Fudge is the Minister of Magic

Religious Views

Don't ask. She'll tell you all about Ishtar and the dark sex cult she wants to found in the name of the ancient Babylonian goddess.   In explicit, graphic detail.

Social Aptitude

Emily's manners and etiguette are flawless. She is a social dynamo, capable of functioning in any scenario and working with anyone, regardless of how she feels about them.

Hobbies & Pets

Emily's hobbies are drinking, smoking, shopping, and sex. She keeps thinking she needs new hobbies, but nothing has caught her eye.   She gave up her pet Winged Serpent to Hagrid when she left for the muggle world, and she has been informed by her uncle she may not have a pet because her work schedule is too demanding - this is something that makes her sad.   She keeps a list of names: people she wants to sleep with, people she would never sleep with (and why), and names she loves the sound of - because she wants to change her name and appearance and run away to the muggle world as soon as she can.

Speech

No matter how much schooling she has had, Emily cannot seem to get rid of her Irish accent, and always speaks with a sort of lilting rhythym.

Wealth & Financial state

Emily amassed a tidy fortune during her nine years of modeling and paid a smart banker to invest it well for her. Richard Amery is a savvy businessman and investor, and has more than quadrupled her original funds.   With the limits on her life imposed by her current job, she would have to work hard for several decades to spend all the money she has earned, and the returns on her investments mean that she can (even with her spending habits) live (very well) off the interest and dividends of her invested fortune.   This means her entire salary from the wizarding world is spending money and fun money.   She uses it as such. With enthusiasm.
