Zarin Lapré

Next to this traveller, there is another man, even more heavily built. His bulging muscles are barely held back by his scale armour, and a large blade is strapped to his back as he leans a little closer to the other two. His bald head shines in the torchlight, and his face is clean shaven. What clothing he wears is tattered in many places and clearly years old.   He doesn't even speak, he just moves closer and towers over you, a good head taller than you. You get the sense that he is trying to intimidate you, and on closer inspection, you can hear him gritting his teeth in frustration.

Physical Description

General Physical Condition

Zarin was a very muscular and athletic man, having spent years carrying heavy armour and swinging his mighty sword.

Body Features

He was very strong and muscular, almost to the point of appearing triangle-shaped. His skin was well-tanned from his days as a sailor.

Facial Features

He had a very square jaw and a long face, rarely breaking out into a smile.

Physical quirks

His walk looked more like a saunter, as his shoulders moved significantly more side-to-side than most people. He also often had to move sideways through doors in order to fit.

Apparel & Accessories

Over his armour, he wore relatively nice clothes, commonly a large green tunic and short red trousers. He had a small red cap that he used to cover his balding head when he wasn't wearing his helmet.

Specialized Equipment

He had a well-made set of scale mail armour that he won in a bet from another sailor, and he also carried a large falchion that is strapped to his back.

Mental characteristics

Personal history

Zarin was born in the small fishing village of Zakleg near Freeport and orphaned at a young age. He grew up with his uncle, who taught him how to hunt the Grassdeer and other animals of the Deranti Forest. As he got stronger, he began to dream of becoming an adventurer, but his dream was cut short when he was called up for his required military service. Choosing to be a sailor in the Imperial Navy, he got into rough company and soon became the top of the pecking order, although he was often punished for insubordination. When he got out of the Navy in his twentieth year, he found that he already had a reputation among the various factions and clans of Freeport, but decided to throw his lot in with Étan Sparg, who just happened to be in the right place to offer Zarin good work. They've been travelling around ever since, most recently staying in the capital and running from the law there with Kal Galdur.   The three cultists were killed in 182 II when the Drakeslayers discovered their hiding place.

Education

  • His uncle taught him how to hunt and how to wield a sword, which has come in handy over the years.
  • He had done significant training with the Imperial Navy and spent two years sailing with them.
  • Employment

  • He worked in the Navy for two years, sailing around and battling pirates.
  • From this, he gained enough notoriety that he was snatched up by Étan within weeks of the end of his service there.
  • He had spent the better part of five years travelling around with Étan and doing work for him by the time of his death.
  • Intellectual Characteristics

Zarin wasn't remarkably bright, preferring to face his problems, like his combatants, head on and swinging without much forethought.

    Morality & Philosophy

Zarin didn't like to spend time on who deserved what or what good and evil were, preferring to divide the world into which people were against him and which people might have been against him. Because of his rough and self-centred nature, however, he would have been considered a nasty character.

    Taboos

  • He disliked travelling by night, especially through forests or other wooded areas.
  • Personality Characteristics

    Motivation

Zarin grew up on tales of adventurers going into the untamed wilds and defeating monsters, and he wished for that life, even though he had been living it for years. Unfortunately, it appeared that instead of becoming a hero who slays monsters, he had become the monster himself.

    Savvies & Ineptitudes

  • He knew his way around a ship, a product of his time in the Navy.
  • He was also very adept with his falchion, having spent years honing his skill with the blade.
  • Secrecy was not one of his strong suits, and only with Étan's help did he not give them all away.
  • Likes & Dislikes

  • He disliked puzzles and codes, preferring to speak plainly and openly. It got him in trouble often.
  • He reveled in violence and trouble-making, never being above a little larceny or mischief.
  • Virtues & Personality perks

  • He was as far from naïve as one could get, and was very suspicious of practically everyone.
  • Vices & Personality flaws

  • He was very violent and was always a hair's breadth away from flying into a rage.
  • Personality Quirks

He was fond of gritting his teeth when he was trying not to get angry (which was nearly all the time).

    Hygiene

He was relatively good at keeping himself clean, and his bald look was due to shaving off all of his hair.

    Social

    Contacts & Relations

  • He was associates with Étan and Kal, and he knew many members of the Dragon Heresy in the province.
  • He had many friends that are still in the Imperial Navy.
  • Family Ties

His uncle is still alive in Zakleg, but Zarin never visited him after leaving home.

    Religious Views

He believed in the heresy begrudgingly, as he wasn't particularly religious before joining Étan and still wasn't interested in much of it.

    Social Aptitude

He wasn't very charismatic, but he had a very strong sense of entitlement and self-centrism that allowed him to get his way. He wasn't afraid to intimidate and belittle those who were weaker than him. His manners were atrocious and he had difficulty with even common social graces.

    Speech

He had a gravelly voice, having wrecked it from years at sea.

    Wealth & Financial state

As much as he was happy doing work for what he considered a good cause, he wasn't paid particularly well for it. He hadn't gotten new clothes in months and some of his armour was getting a little rusty by the time of his death.
