Levelling
In recent years, the idea of Levelling has been introduced to subdivide planets based on magical knowledge and how Magic physically manifests on these worlds. There are three Levels - although there are some researchers that indicate that Levels 2 and 3 are the same Level, or that there are Levels past 3. This system has been often referred to as a scale or timeline, with magic being much more commonplace and more advanced on Level 3 planets than Level 2 or 1.
These Levels are:
Level 1: Magic is invisible. Only mages and demons can interact with or be affected by magic effects in any significant fashion. Some mages have reported that non-magical beings have felt an incomprehensible emotion or a "sick" feeling when around magical objects, although none such claims have been substantiated. Level 1 planets often have secrecy laws in place to prevent knowledge of magic being discovered by a non-magical population.
Level 2: Magic can be seen by non-magical creatures as magical ones, but not in the proper way. A magical plant may appear as a similar looking non-magical plant. A demon may appear as a strange shadow on a wall or a passing shape. Although magic might be known to the general population, they cannot understand it or perceive it properly. Level 2 have some of the same secrecy laws as Level 1 planets, mostly to prevent non-magical humanoids from misusing magic that they do not understand.
Level 3: Magic is visible to all, but only mages and demons can actually manipulate it. The secret's out, so-to-speak, and magical and non-magical people are both equally entitled to information about magic and its use. There have been no recorded events of a Level 2 to Level 3 jump in recent times, but it is often theorized that this jump must have occurred on Level 3 planets at some point.
