Luminglass

Isturoth is currently experiencing a major technological boom which has spawned industries and innovations like Steam-Power, High Metallurgy and Frostkeeping. Another of these developing technologies has been the creation of luminglass, the name for intricate forging and blowing of glass into lenses.

Utility

The way lenses magnify and reflect light has been studied extensively to the point where telescopic devices have been designed to study the stars. Luminglass is also used in the creation of corrective eyeglasses, illusions for amusement, burning glass, reading stones, optical microscopes and devices that project light and shadow.

Manufacturing

Finding the best type of sand for making optical glass can be somewhat tricky in Isturoth. This is because it must be high grade and iron-free, fairly uncommon in the aptly-named Ironstone Mountains. It has even been reported that sand has been imported from neighbouring kingdom Eskarr and the treacherous deserts of Vokaan.
When constructing luminglass technology, it is not uncommon for lead oxide or any other chemical variants to be melted together with the glass over the course of a day. The mixture and alloys can change depending on what the glass will be needed for. Broken pieces of glass are often blended in to help smooth the consistency and reduce waste.

Social Impact

Luminglass technology has signficantly improved the lives of the people of Isturoth. The seeing-impaired can read better and innovations in the craft have allowed other sciences to progress at an accelerated rate. The medical field owes much to the lenscrafters in their ability to treat the sick and perform surgery, as do astronomers and those who study the skies. The technology to project light and shadow is a very exciting advancement to everyday citizens, who watch dramatic shows performed by shadows with great amusement.

Complexity

As technology in Isturoth progresses faster and faster, lenscrafters have been forced to accomodate, making smaller and more precise devices, capable of greater magnification. The complexity of this technology will only increase amidst the boom.
