The Rusted Wastes

After The Displacement upturned the mountains and valleys for hundreds of miles, after a few centuries the surrounding lands had stabilised into a relative calm. The environment, however, had been irreparably damaged, transformed into a blasted wasteland of black glass and molten lava flows. Much was blanketed in a thick layer of ashfall that continued for decades.   The name comes from the reports of those who attempted recovery efforts. Stone structures had crumbled to rubble and any signs of prior habitation was marked by the warped scraps of iron that bled the rust of centuries.

Ecosystem

Very little of the original ecosystem has been left intact from the cataclysmic devastation that forever changed the region. Even the hardiest of grasses could not recover when the dust had settled. Ashfall from the disaster continued for many years, tainting the rivers that flowed out of or through the area, and spoiling the soil. This environmental poisoning had lingering effects for years as water sources that had been reliable for countless ages were now toxic.   All wildlife was wiped out in the Rusted Wastes and those that survived fled far and wide.

Localized Phenomena

For a long time, there have been reports of continued seismic and geothermal activity. Rivers of magma continued to flow and smoke billowed out of the mouth of the fateful volcano. In addition, geysers of toxic gases would explode out of the earth unexpectedly. Pools of boiling, sulfurous water formed in valleys and further blighted the landscape.

Fauna & Flora

Even the wyrms could not find this barren wasteland hospitable. So far, there are currently no reports of any living flora or fauna in this region.

History

Tourism

There is an ambitious few who have taken an interest in this region. Rumours circulate about the houses preserved under the crust of lava and ash, of buried hoard of lost treasures, ripe for the taking.   These treasure-hunters are not looked upon kindly, however. As well as being exceedingly dangerous, it is seen as a very disreputable profession.
