Frozen Furies

There are certain volcanoes in Isturoth that lay dormant (or "sleeping" to the Isturians). Some of these are known to have surfaces covered with towers of ice, billowing plumes of hot air. These frozen pillars carry geothermal heat from inside the volcano and expel them into the frigid air, giving the appearance of chimneys made of snow.   Dormant volcanoes in the right regions at the right altitude can still gather ice and snow on their peaks. Gas and heat seep through the side of the volcano melt the snow above, which carves out a cave. Steam escaping from the cave freezes as soon as it hits the air, building the chimneys of ice and snow. Some of these can reach as high as 60 feet tall.   The Frozen Furies have even become something of a tourist attraction. Certain regions of the Ironstone Mountains are known for sporting these naturally-occurring phenomena, and so people will travel for miles around to come and see the environmental marvel.

Mythology

As most volcanic activity in Isturoth is linked to Zurava, the god of rage and instinct, the towers of snow referred to as "Frozen Furies" are also seen as manifestations of their influence upon the mountains. As Zurava's anger boils the earth, it is spotted seeping out through ominous spikes of ice.   While many consider this an ill omen or a sign of danger, people have grown used to the sight and now there are a number of individuals who are in awe of such a sight. Once word has spread to nearby towns, people will travel some distance to observe these exhibitions of divine power: pillars of ice puffing heat and gas.
