City of Thunder and Tears

Located on an island between Eskarr and Nel'Akhiron, a sinking city of dark, porous stone stands as a grim memory to the Akhir empire that once cast shadows upon much of the world. Its name has been lost to time, save for its epithet it has been given by those who have had the misfortunate of washing up on its shores.   It is likely the city once functioned like many of those in Nel'Akhiron, a bastion of magical lore and learning. With its extinguishing and subsequent drowning, most of this knowledge has been lost, as have any items of power.

Once, the island was much larger that what is visible above the waves and it housed an extensive settlement. Now though, all that remains is the upper city, built upon raised earth. The rest of the island and the city have slipped beneath the waves. The ruins of the city have made a treacherous reef that has caused the wreck of many ships, forcing them to make port on the only dry part of the city.   A walled citadel is the primary structure visible from afar. The plateau slopes downwards into the sea, allowing a useful point to beach one's boat. The walls and structures of the citadel create a sort of labyrinth, at the centre of lies the heart of the once-mighty city. The towering spires of the keep have long-since collapsed into the sea, but fragments of their majesty remain to cast intimidating silhouettes of looming dread.

Inhabitants

The Akhir have long perished or fled from this immense city, but that does not mean the sunken hallways are left dormant. Inhuman shapes slip between corridors in the darkest parts of the city. There are catacombs and tunnels that not only survived the sinking of the city, but support life. Some who speak of this forbidden place believe the desolate spirits of the wizards that once lived there now haunt its halls in now forsaken forms. Others will say they are the remnants of the wizards horrific experiments or their minions that once served them, but now roam free.   Whatever the case, the creatures that have made this tomb their home are unwelcoming to guests on their island. The dark beings appear mindless and soulless, prowling for anything that will provide them sustenance. Echoes of their wails and moans can be heard down the winding passages. They seem well equipped to live both on land and in the water, making the sunken ruins of the city the perfect home for such dire things.
