Convinced that the door into the vault would not budge, Sydrin surmised that its possible whoever was ringing the bell was ascending from the vault at night, and they might need to wait until the sun set. With plenty of daylight left, the group decided to investigate the strange broken singing.
After coming to the cliffs edge, a cove was spotted far below, and Nessali transformed into a giant lizard and transported the group down. Here they found a fey mermaid-like creature named Aina, who was terrified of the group. She had been trapped here by the evil that permeated the region, and begged the group for aid. In return she offered her pearl bracelet and the location of some mysterious treasure. She claimed the problem stemmed from the mysterious boat in the harbor, but could not offer much else in support. The group returned, and decided to see if they could find a boat encase they needed to venture out.
Back in town, the group investigated the northern docks and found a suitable craft that might still be sea-worthy. They also found the only Cheerwinst tavern, which was in better condition than many of the other buildings. With that the group returned to the chapel to await whatever evil lurked in its depths.
As the sun began to set, an eerie scraping was heard from the bowels of the chapel, and a deformed and disgustingly bloated man with a massive maw for a stomach emerged. It disgorged a bile acid attack and swung with its club, but the group had caught the bloated corpse of Brother Morton off guard and managed to overcome him. He had a strange sickly artifact that radiated a blue light.
The group descended into the cellar hoping to bar it, and was unable to budge the enormous slab the undead had used to bar the door with. Zombies and skeletons pursued and the group fought them off, but it became apparent this would be their tomb, so the group ran out of the church as a horde of undead followed.
Back at the docks, the group hopped onto a rowboat and sailed out into the harbor, hoping to leave the undead behind. Unfortunately, not far off the shore a scraping was heard beneath the boat, and a skeleton infused with the flesh of sea creatures boarded! A few more followed shortly after, and they drug Sydrin off into the water. Thankfully it was shallow here, and after a difficult fight the group overcame the vile creatures. With the dangerous creatures chasing them, the group headed to the mermaids cove to hide until the dawn.
