The Silent Three Mountains in The Lost Archipelago | World Anvil

The Silent Three Mountains

From a distance, the Silent Three appear to be mountains. They are massive, rocky structures, reaching into the sky. Trees cling to the sides, grasses grow, and there is a heavy layer of dirt covering them. They have boulders, caves, and seasonal snows occasionally blanket their peaks. Many of the local tribes steer clear of these peaks, for Mawcrusha's are known to nest their young on its rock outcroppings. Why the Mawcrushas chose to nest hear is unclear, but they do seem drawn to these mountains. To most, the Silent Three are simple geological structures, but strange tales of these wayward mountains are told by the locals when they huddle around their campfires. The stories describe these mountains as old otherworldly, dangerous, and powerful.

Some say that the silent three were god beasts, great dragons, Giants, or early deities that were turned to stone. The cause of this is often the subject of these whispered stories. They speak of conflicts between great powers, that it was a spell gone wrong, or that the great beings did it to themselves. The SilentThree are also known as the Silent Sisters, or the Three Sisters.

The earliest stories trace back to the fate spinners The Schattenwald, who saw the upcoming calamity of the Age of Chaos. Whatever the beings were, the stories all say that they decided to rest, waiting for when civilization came to the LostArchipelago against. They pulled stone over their recumbent forms and went for their long sleep. The power of these early deities is such that occasionally, those touched by the arcane can hear their eldritch dreams. Some worry that the arrival of so many will be the cause which finally leads to the Silent Threewaking once more. However, these concerns are not significant enough concerns to have stopped the growth of civilization. There are those in Terminus who upon hearing the sound of distant thunder, will turn to gaze upon the distant mountains and see if the time has finally come for the mountains to awaken.
