Prosperity's Gate Settlement in The Lost Archipelago | World Anvil

Prosperity's Gate

Prosperity’s Gate stands astride two mountain ranges that create a corridor linking the north east of the Aqshyian Island to the north west. These two lands couldn’t be more different. The east is a blasted wasteland of volcanic ash and lava, while the west is fertile grasslands, likely fed by volcanoes that have since gone dormant. The peoples of these lands are great farmers and artisans, but suffered under raids from those of the east. When the Bone Tithe was signed, their troubles became the concerns of the All-Points Legion. Those raiders would no longer be tolerated, peace had been bought with the bones of the fallen.

To this end the Harvester of the Divine used the first of the tithes and the bones gained when subjugating the land to build a massive carpet wall from one end of the mountain pass to the other. Where such a wall, if made of stone, would require maintenance and merely provide an obstacle to movement through it, the artistry of the Legion’s Mortisans leads to creations with more… utility. Those who visit the settlement often could swear that the wall is alive. Parts of the bone battlements seem to have moved when you weren’t looking, defensive emplacements rearrange themselves without any attendants, and the spiked bone of the wall never seems to wear under the elements.

Those who have tried to invade find that the suspicions are indeed true, the Prosperity’s Gate can defend itself. Those who try to climb find themselves swallowed up by the wall itself, ladder and all. Those who try to fly over find the wall reaches up to snatch them out of the air, or throws projectiles at them. At the end, tendrils extend to claim the bones of the fallen and the wall reinforces itself. What hungry souls were woven into the wall to achieve this no one knows, but they perform their duties eagerly.

Beyond the wall though stand the first mass manufacturing cathedrals of the mortisans on this continent. From here came not only the infrastructure for the Legion, but the legionnaires themselves. Ranks of Mortek Guard march forth from the sparkling bone cathedrals, decorated with iconography of the various deities of the Realms being consumed by some dark hungry maw.

It is not just the dead that rule the city though. The living have come from far and wide to both help guard the passage into their lands, but also to learn from the unliving sages of the Legion. As the natives in these lands had no great empires or academies of their own, now their wizards and shamans learn magic from minds hundreds of years old and grow strong. To this end training grounds and academies have been raised to create a new generation of living heroes, heroes that the Legion expects to give bodies of bones and create more Ossiarchs from once they fall.

A two-bodied chamber rules the Gate with that in mind. The first is the senate of bone, composed of Mortisans and Hekatos who see to the defense of the gate and rule on matters that concern the Ossiarchs. The lower chamber of Flesh is elected by the living from amongst the living and decides on matters that concern just them, things like allocating crop lands, or crimes amongst the living. As long as it doesn’t compromise the functioning of the Gate they are left to manage their affairs as they please. Some notable figures amongst the city are as follows:

Brelak Codewright: The dwarven High Speaker of the Chamber of Flesh, he runs the parliamentary proceedings of the living. Considered a hard man, but ultimately fair and largely impartial, no vote of no-confidence has ever been brought against him. Some fear though that his insistence on the rule of law might cause him to speak out loudly against the Ossiarchs someday and he won’t know when to close his mouth.

Tewan Mistwalk: A Darkling trader who is rumored to have bought their seat in the Chamber’s halls, Tewan controls a great deal of the flow of goods crucial to the mortal population of the Gate. Her business deals are always ironclad, but rumors say her personal dealings are far more treacherous. She would like to figure out if the Ossiarchs have any vices of their own, and how to profit from them.

Mortisan Emberhalt: Composed partly of the souls of the first hedge wizards and shamans who tried to fight the Ossiarch’s arrivals, Emberhalt now serves with fervor Nagash and the Legion. He is very familiar with the cultures and peoples of these lands, as he was once many of them. This knowledge has served him well in portraying the Ossiarchs as a source of prosperity, and to keep the various people of the land more suspicious of each other.
