Cysthearth Settlement in The Lost Archipelago | World Anvil

Cysthearth

As the pox-crusade moved deeper into the Hyshlands, the Order of Rot uncovered their first clue of the whereabouts of Horticulous' Infected Ladle. At the fork in Hysh’s eastern river was a fortified village with a temple at its center. It was no match for Vyrraki’s fury, and the townsfolk were either captured or sacrificed to Nurgle. The town offered little in resources, but inside the temple, the blightkings discovered an unexpected gift.

The temple’s vault held a tocsin bound in holy chains. Ghungus could sense a presence within the bell, and whispers entered his mind begging the warrior to set it free. The Rotbringer broke the chains, and the possessed tocsin rang in glee seven times. Upon the seventh ring, the tocsin broke, and the daemon bound to it assembled in front of the blightkings.

The Poxbringer, who called itself Purilax, thanked Ghungus and said that Nurgle had sent him to help find the spoon. Purilax claimed the Infected Ladle was stolen long ago and taken somewhere across the Lost Archipelago. In order to locate it, Purilax suggested Ghungus continue to spread Nurgle’s Rot across the land, bringing more of The Plague God’s essence into the region and allowing his followers to sense its power. The Poxbrknger then presented Ghungus with what he alleged were splinters of the spoon as proof of its existence. Ghungus didn’t believe a word he said, but it was the only proof he had that the blasted spoon was real. Besides, showcasing these fragments would boost the Order’s morale and spread his notoriety to the other denizens of the Lost Archipelago.

To commemorate the occasion, the Order of Rot began construction on a new settlement along the river’s fork called Cysthearth. The town would serve as a pilgrimage for new knights of the order and any follower who wished to honor the Great Grandfather by ringing the reconstructed tocsin and touching the laddle’s sacred splinters. The shrine was erected inside the temple and the bell placed atop a three-tiered spire. Whenever the tocsin tolls seven times, more daemons enter reality to guard Cysthearth and spread Nurgle’s blessing.

The town also serves as a buttress with a dam built across the northern fork. The blubberous construct diverts the flow of goods and ships to the southern river down towards Goutspire. This has turned the eastern river into a marshy wetland, perfect conditions for rot farms and corpse orchards.
