Blackpeak
Blackpeak has been built as a bastion for research and typical Haethen dilettantism. The keep was originally built on the site of a small cottage set up by a handful of Haethens, who wanted to go to the highest point in the near vicinity. They set up to be able to spy upon the stars, to watch the new heavens wheel through their dance and chart it. In part, they hoped to figure out where in the Realms the Lost Archipelago itself is. During the Mournking's war with the Haethens, the handful of folk at the mountain top became a small garrison, as the view from the mountain was of strategic interest.
Even this was insufficient, though, to build a larger structure. The effort of building a permanent structure on the mountain top was deemed too difficult, as bringing materials up the massive slope was a huge investment of effort.
Everything changed with the Orciarch Bonesplitters attacked. It was decided that the Haethen settlements would need the longest possible warning before armies could reach them. As such, material was slowly brought to the peak, and simple wooden palisades were built.
With typical Haethen priorities, however, the next step was an observatory. This large building houses the largest telescope the Haethens have been able to build, and is often used with a smoke tinted filter to observe sunrises and sunsets. At night, it is often used for stargazing, and occasionally, it is used to track enemy troop movements.
The decisive military victories over the Orciarch are largely the result of the information provided by the Blackpeak garrison. With the troop movements clearly telegraphed, the army was taken apart piecemeal, and in the end could offer little threat to the greater Haethen cause.
On the conclusion of the war, the Blackpeak was expanded upon, with plans to expand the tunnels leading to the water within the mountain, that the garrison could have a ready and easily accessed water source, the greatest issue facing those living on the peak.
