Session 38: Princess Prison Panic
2cnd & 3rd of Newgrowth
General Summary
The party decides not to resist their arrest in Brothers' Crossing, despite not knowing why they are being detained. Uthal, Leaf, and Indra are magically put to sleep, but the two half-elves of the group resist the dream magic. Instead, Felix is magically restrained and controlled, while Killian simply chooses to cooperate and walk along. This allows Killian to notice that Indra is carried off just after they hear the guards shout, “Get the princess to safety!” The rest of the group is brought to the Deephold prison, where they are divided among the various floors of the now partially repaired facility. Here, each of them will be questioned by the Truthbringers of the Clergy, who specialize in truth‑revealing magic.
On the top floor, Felix regains his senses in a cell with a window, and he immediately starts demanding to be released by the guard posted outside. Some quick convincing eventually gets the guard out of sight after Felix asks him to fetch the questioners so the misunderstanding can be cleared up quickly. Felix uses the moment without supervision to break out of his cell and recover his weapons and magical items. However, instead of escaping the prison, he confidently walks up to a rather surprised group of three Truthbringers, who immediately begin questioning him about the kidnapping of the princess, the crime the party has been accused of. Though the magic confirms his innocence, the interrogators want to speak to the other party members first. Thus, Felix spends the rest of his time playing cards with the guard who had been posted outside his cell.
The next person interrogated is Uthal. He awakens in a slightly older-looking cell and decides to simply wait for his turn with the Truthbringers. He also does not resist the interrogation magic and mostly clears his own name—and the party’s—by proving he had nothing to do with the kidnapping. Convinced he is not in any further danger, Uthal waits out his time in the cell. Leaf, however, has different intentions. They find themself in a cell that had been flooded when Cerval escaped but has since been drained, guarded by the same guard who was present when Indra had the curse mark removed from her hand. They convince the guard to bring a message to Killian, and once alone, transform into a rat and escape the cell. Rat‑Leaf then sets off to find Killian, eventually ending up on a still partially flooded floor while guards frantically search for the escapee.
Meanwhile, Killian is not enjoying being stuck in a cell with water up to his ankles. He learns that he too has been accused of kidnapping the princess, though he is not particularly worried about the upcoming questioning. He does, however, become slightly concerned after noticing a suspicious-looking rat swimming after the three clergymen—something he immediately assumes to be Leaf in animal form. As Killian gives similar answers to the questions as Uthal and Felix, the Truthbringers seem mostly satisfied and leave the building. In the meantime, Killian uses his persuasive talents to get himself relocated from the near-bottom of the prison to the ground floor, where he and Leaf discuss possible escape plans.
While all of this is happening in the Deephold prison, Indra awakens in a luxurious room inside Founders' Fortress. It quickly becomes clear that Indra is not Indra at all, but rather Princess Aelliania Lucilia Caterina Levant Amria of the Order of the Golden Sun. She and her brother, Syrus, have a heated discussion—first about whether her companions should be executed for kidnapping her, but once he learns she left of her own accord, the argument shifts to how irresponsible it was for her to simply vanish from the capital. Despite this, the group manages to convince the heir of the Order to let them all go free and to allow Aelliania to continue adventuring to support the Order. However, Aelliania is told she cannot use her royal titles for wealth while adventuring, cannot reveal her true name, and must have her every movement reported back to the royal household. Begrudgingly, Aelliania accepts these new restrictions, but not before convincing the guards to give her and the group 5000 gp and two very special potions.
Having regained their freedom, the party has just a few things left to do that day. First, they discuss their experiences and ask the newly revealed princess a few questions. They also visit Norfaed and learn that the message Killian received a day earlier was probably from one of the Truthbringers instead in an attempt to lure them here. They agree to speak with Norfaed again tomorrow to catch up on the research he has done for the party. Finally, the group heads to the Red Dragon Inn to turn in for the night, as a long-awaited, well‑deserved rest awaits them.
