Session 31: Dream Destruction

General Summary

After fighting Galgrun and learning that they might have an opportunity to end the dream during their dinner with the king, the party heads out of the tower of the Dragon. Killian, Felix, and Leaf head off to the resistance to inform them of the plan to end the dream. To their surprise, however, they notice Knuc near the resistance outpost, who informs them that he has already conversed with the resistance. Despite this, Felix and Leaf enter the hideout to meet Dorik Fyrbel just to make sure that he has the right information. This turns out to be a good idea, as he hands the party a few 'potions of long rest'—a 'well-deserved way to regain some energy after battling a dragon. In the meantime, Killian starts to ask around the place to see if anyone has seen an elf around in the last 20 years, but this does not seem to be the case. At the same time, Indra and Uthal use magic to find if any of the Xol-lathar Ghouls that had fought with them against the star mimic are around inside the dream. However, just like Killian, they are unable to find a sign that they are present within this dream.
As the party prepares for their dinner date, they all meet at their temporary abode. From there, they are escorted by a group of guards to the private quarters of the king. Though they are still wondering what the distraction is going to be from Knuc, they are slightly reassured as Felix spots him imitating one of the guards in the escort. The party is led beyond the throne room, into the dining room. After some discussions with Larynd Swif, the personal chef of the king, the party joins the king for what they hope to be his final supper. They converse a bit, with the party learning a few bits of information. For example, the king is hiding that he has in fact seen an elf recently and that the mists were not yet present when High King Mor II was around. They even learn that the father of the king left along with those that escaped Am Galar, leaving his son behind in charge. Eventually dinner is disturbed when guards come rushing in, informing the king that a rift has opened within his private quarters. As a result, the king is escorted away, and the party is free to set in motion their final plan. They drink their potions of invisibility and head on their way.
As the party attempts to navigate the king's private quarters, they mistakenly end up on the balcony overlooking the throne room. They can see the carnage that Knuc has unleashed as several creatures fight dwarven guards. They decide to make this unfortunate location into their advantage, as Felix climbs up towards the second balcony where the sealed room of the king is located. From there, he spots a small army of dwarves defending the seal. He quickly gathers the other party members, and together they attempt to sneakily make their way towards the seal. The plan ends up becoming more complicated as a cat-wildshaped Leaf is suddenly visible as they approach a dwarf covered in runes. Despite this, the party manages to dodge most of the anti-magic zones and eventually makes it to the seal. After Felix opens the door to reveal the High King surrounded by clerics all in a sort of stasis, each of the party members slowly starts revealing themselves as they blast spells towards the incapacitated body of the king. Though the captain of the guard puts up a difficult fight, the party is eventually victorious as a third fireball manages to incinerate the sealed room. As they hear the voice of the king declare that it is now the responsibility of the party to fix the mistakes of Am Galar, the last thing they see is a shadowy humanoid figure coming from Indra that surrounds the incinerated corpse of the High King. Thus, the party suddenly finds themselves broken free from the dream on the staircase towards upper Am Galar, ready to explore it for real this time.
