Recidae

This delightful, clever, and seldom seen creature is a type of reptile that is about the size of a stegosaurus. It has two legs, two arms, and a long, powerful tail. They have a thick, strong skin covered in small, smooth scales, which is usually either black, dark gold, purple, dark silver, or a combination of these colors.
They live in high, mountainous areas and are a rare creature to find. They're carnivores and their large, long mouths and long tongue, they are capable of eating smaller creatures. Though, their bite has a habit of causing a dangerous condition called mountain insanity.
They're nocturnal and rely on their hearing and extra sense to get around. They do have large, elliptic eyes, but their sight is a bit poor. They have thin noses and tiny, almost hidden ears. Their heads are fairly large in comparison to their bodies.
They make sounds ranging from low pitched to high pitched and have a extremely large range of sounds they make to indicate discoveries, dangers, and otherwise communicate with each other.
These creatures are quite forceful and they get very territorial. They mate once every 18 months and they mate and bond with a single partner for life. Which, with their fairly short lifespans, isn't extraordinary.
