Moonfall
Event Date: 1000 AC
Once upon a time, the world had two moons: Luna Majoris and Luna Minoris.
Roughly one thousand years before the formation of the Hegemony -- or about 1732 years before the start of the campaign -- Luna Majoris began to slip from its orbit and descend toward the planet. At this time, northern Verden was home to some of the largest and most advanced cities in the world, and they began to study the coming crisis with increasing panic. Scholars from Clocktown projected the moon would impact the city directly, with lesser (but still cataclysmic) debris scattering across the greater Termina Fields and even as far south as Roslen.
Sheikah scientists and advisors counseled the leaders of Clocktown on potential solutions. One such plan was the rapid construction of mechanized giants using material leftover from Hylia's battle against the Demon King. With their might combined, they could shield Clocktown from direct impact and safely break Luna Majoris apart into more manageable debris.
But the Sheikah and the Hylians who lived in Clocktown were both undermined by internal corruption. The Yiga Clan splintered off from the Sheikah in these days, having sworn fealty to the Demon King. Likewise, some Hylians from Clocktown were tempted by the promise of ruling the survivors in the aftermath of destruction. The Demon King's influence spread through the city through their hands, undermining plans to save the city.
The Demon King's plan was to destroy Clocktown outright, sending his agents to corrupt the divine machines sent by Hylia's people -- hijacking control and forcing them to stand down when the time came. They would absorb the life essence of Luna Majoris, being a living organism rather than a simple moon, and project its then ghostly spirit back into the sky in the form a glowing red Blood Moon. Evil followers could then use the Blood Moon as a magical amplifier, harnessing its spiritual power to raise the Demon King's ancient armies from the dead, taking civilization by surprise.
This plan, it seems, was successful..... to a point.
Demise's power infected the guardians. They stood down at the critical moment. Clocktown was destroyed by the impact of Luna Majoris and Verden was scarred from the event. But something unexpected happened. There had been a fledgling god living inside the moon. Feeding off its organic material. Growing stronger. And when Luna Majoris struck the planet, this new god was released unto the world.
Its chaotic, malicious power merged with Demise's dark magic stored within the corrupted guardians. This fusion of two different evil magic sources resulted in the birth of a brand new toxic plague: a substance known as Malice.
The Sheikah and Yiga then briefly reunited to help stop the spread of Malice before it could corrupt and overwhelm survivors and local creatures. But the damage was done.
The great city of Clocktown was destroyed, along with all its advanced technology, and the world entered a new era.
