Hyapor House Building / Landmark in The Last Line | World Anvil

Hyapor House

It was the bigger of 'em, full to the rafters with nerds and their knowledge, and occasionally with a buncha preening diplomats trying to get a handful of coin from the other cities. Meeting year was always awful. Still, if any of their bases woulda been suited to handling an emergency, should've been Hyapor. Shame.
— Qelyi, a local of the area
Hyapor House was the primary headquarters for the Laslin Union, from its construction in 2228 until its destruction in 3256 alongside the city of Taufa. It served as the architectural influence for the Union's bases in the city's of each of its members, and as the primary storehouse of all their official records and historical documents.

History

After the Laslin Union was founded in 2225, it was determined that they ought to have a primary headquarters throughout the year, while changing which city they would hold meetings in on a rotational schedule. The city of Taufa was chosen as the site for this headquarters after a debate in 2226, with the goal of lessening 'westward bias' towards the isolated city of Stadeben through its 'central' location.   The building began construction after negotiations with the Taufan government over where it would be located, eventually selecting an oceanside district named Hyapor far from the city's own centre of political power. This district would soon lend its name to the building, despite a more 'official' name being used in most documentation.   Granted a decent block by Taufa, the building was able to make good use of the space in order to contain meeting halls, accommodation, and an extensive library of various historical documents. This would soon be filled with a catalogue of the minutes of every meeting held by the Laslin Union, regardless of which city they were held in.   Hyapor House would diligently serve its function for several hundred years, undergoing repairs and renovations intermittently to deal with the ravage of time. The most consequential of these was in 2842, when the meeting hall and accommodations were severely burnt during a thunderstorm. Thanks to the diligent efforts of the Union's staff, the library was spared, and the House was painstakingly rebuilt over the following year.   Like the rest of the city around it, Hyapor House was destroyed in 3256 when it collapsed into the Finuhit Ocean. Due to its portside location it was among the first buildings to fall, and almost nothing was recovered from its records.

"All the records! We had some of the oldest texts in the world, going back millenia! If only we could've saved them!"
"Jeremiah, mate... Can you at least pretend to feel sad about the people who died in that building?"
"Did they have all the world's knowledge?"
"Had more than you and twice as much sense."
