Tekalo
Marco's heart fluttered at the thought of leaving and of the adventure Tekalo had laid before him. But it wasn't the Mud Trolls that made him hesitate. "I can't," he whispered, remembering the Water Master's anger. "Nepo—" He shivered at the sudden thought of the fierce rainstorm that had pelted them not so long ago.
Tekalo smirked and waved a dismissive hand at the thought. "So long as we reach Myrth first my Master will be unable to do anything.
"It's still no," Marco sighed. Tekalo looked away, silent for a minute before spindling the map and returning it to the shelf. Marco watched the landscape disappear and stared at the roll of possibilities where it sat.
"I can't go," he whispered, shaking his head. "I won't go."
Tekalo sighed. "I understand, I do," he commiserated. "I'll just go alone," he continued with a nod, as if facing a final dread. Marco gaped at him as he placed the map in his travel pack, shouldered it and headed out the door, slamming it closed behind him. For a full minute Marco stared at the closed door, shocked. "Water's Apprentice is going to cross the Fanterra Plain alone," he thought, "alone through the Forest of Fear." Sighing he picked up his own travel pack. "I can't let him go alone," he said to himself as he left the room.
"Tekalo!" he shouted down the hall. There was no answer and no Land-Nymph in sight. Marco started running.
"I knew you'd change your mind," Tekalo called from behind him. Stopping Marco spun around.
"I haven't changed my mind. But Nepo's right, you're his apprentice and someone has to protect you."
"Is that what you are? My protector?" Tekalo said smiling coyly, a laugh in his voice. Marco shook his head in exasperation, lost for words. "Come on then," said the Land-Nymph, striding past.
Tekalo the land-nymph. He has thin white hair, purple eyes. He is Basskin's son, Donatan's nephew, Trillip's friend. He is a High Water Mage, Chosen of Water. Tekalo, Teek for short, is a troublemaker and scofflaw at heart. He is confident in his power, position, and status. As a High Water Mage and Chosen of Water, people assume wrongly that he cannot work Fire--his antithesis. However, his father insisted that he and his cousin Clippen learn to light a fire, so he can. He prefers to work with ice but needs water available to do so. His favorite spell is an ice blade, which he creates from a sword hilt and phial of water that he carries at his hip.
