DataNet

The DataNet is a massive information and communication system. Each colony and space station has a computer that acts as a DataNet host. The DataNet is subject to communications lag when transmitting data over great distances. By using the NavBeacon network, the lag is reduced, but still exists.
The DataNet can be used to set up an online ID to be used to transmit messages. This is similar to an ancient technology called email. Messages, which can include text, data, audio, or video, can be left for someone and retrieved during the next DataNet sync. It is generally assumed that any message sent will take at least 24 hours to be received, and another 24 hours for a reply, unless both parties are in the same system, when the messages are instantaneous. In that case, usually a comm connection is made for real-time conversation.
The DataNet can also be used for retrieving information from various public source databases. There's programming, available such as entertainment programs or live news feed from one of the Entertainment Networks. The full archive of previous broadcasts are also available for replay.
