Aurax

Aurax have four powerful, hoofed hind legs which provide strong locomotion and disperse their massive weight evenly even on soft surfaces. Their upper body and forearms share similar physiology with those of humanoids, the arms ending in thick two-fingered, single-thumbed hands.   An aurax’s squat head sits close upon its shoulders with no discernible neck, and can defensively retract even a bit further into the body cavity in times of danger. Their jaws have evolved smaller and smaller to accommodate their more omnivorous diets. An aurax’s four eyes give it double-stereo vision particularly adapted to sensing motion in a wide spectrum of light, proof against threatening predators in prehistoric times.

Basic Information

Anatomy

Thick and stocky, Aurax have the lower body about the same size as a pygmy hippopotamus, and the upper half of a humanoid. They have thick muscular bodies and tend to be stronger than most humanoids. Their arms end in hands with two thick fingers, and a single, thick thumb.

Additional Information

Social Structure

Aurax have no real social structure. They are very nomadic by nature, and tend to stay within their own family, or tribal units.

Facial characteristics

Aurax have 4 eyes, and a small mouth. No visible nose, though small openings near the lower eyes act as a human noise.

Average Intelligence

Aurax are as intelligent as most sentient species, but they are from a low tech world. Since much technology is designed for smaller hands, Aurax often break technology when they try to use it.

Average Technological Level

Aurax are low tech, with an Aurax blunderbuss being one of their most technologically advanced creations.

History

Before spaceflight, nomadic aurax tribes spread first across their native continent and later, using primitive rafts, across narrow straits to occupy all Auran’s major landmasses. Frequent migrations kept them constantly on the move, so unlike early human civilizations that became sedentary and isolated from one another, aurax communities continued to mingle to trade and communicate through its primitive epochs.   Permanent settlements only sprang up in geologically advantageous locations, such as at the mouths of mighty rivers—facilitating trade—or in vales rich with continuous foliage and blocked from adverse weather. Aurax family relationships trumped any geographical or national relationships; blood kinship regulated their interpersonal relationships.

Interspecies Relations and Assumptions

Aurax never developed their own hyperspace technology, though some wanderers have accepted passage with travelers that have visited earth. Aurax bodyguards are sought after as a status symbol among both the wealthiest, and lowest, members of society.
