Orichalcum Material in The Known World | World Anvil

Orichalcum

Orichalcum, also known as the Metal of Dragons, is a type of precious metal shrouded in myth and legend. It was first mentioned in some of the numerous epics told by Nioban scholars, many of which were lost, burned, or seized by Hephsut after he conquered the nation.   There are certain stories that tell of the metals' locations. Some say that Nidean madmen once delved into the depths of the Kalkaross Peninsula's labyrinthine caves and found great veins of the legendary metal. Other tales say that the reckless mining of this material may have been one of the factors that lead to the Sinking of Sekkar & Vauldis Rises to Lichdom.   Other bardic epics sing of a great lost city somewhere in Iotia which has been the subject of many failed expeditions into the Iotian Rainforest by greed-ridden, foolhardy men. Their prize was the great city of Orichalos, and the wealth of the precious metal within, hence the origin of the metal's namesake.   Its exact properties are unknown, as many fables and legends have been woven about orichalcum's effects. Some say it can miraculously heal the sick. Its glimmer purportedly never dampens and is capable of blinding anyone that lays eyes upon it first hand. Some legends even say that the metal itself conducts the very essence of raw Magic. There are many other tall tales about its otherwordly characteristics, but one remains consistent throughout all iterations: it can only be forged into a workable material by the breath of a Dragon.
