Tattoos

[The People have a tradition of tattoos, for as long as they have existed.
The designs of the tattoos are as follows:
  • For men, spirals on their shoulders.
  • For women, a symbol representing the Moons on the forehead, called the Moons’ Blessings.
  • For kilak, a triangle in place of the Moons’ Blessings.
  • For shamans, a spiral on the forehead, above the Moons’ Blessings or triangle for women and kilak.

History

The tradition of tattooing has existed for as long as the People themselves have existed.

Execution

Tattoos are given during the coming-of-age ritual by the Shaman, but can also be acquired for other reasons and to signify other things.

Components and tools

The tattoo making tools include a needle made out of bone, and ink made out of soot.

Participants

For the coming-of-age tattoos, the Shaman has to give them, but other tattoos can be given by anyone.

Observance

The coming-of-age tattoos are given on the recipient’s birthday, but other tattoos can be given at any time.
