Basic Information

Biological Traits

Due to their fairly static facial structure, the Kryad evolved what was once a camouflage reflex into a system of communication through the colour-changing chromatophore cells in the skin. Through shifting patterns and the colour, Kryad emotions are swiftly communicated via an extensive network of these cells via electrical impulses directly from the brain. This makes their colour communication more similar to Earthen Cephalopods, than their Chameleon ‘cousins’. Kryads further emphasise emotional states through vocalisation, via the dual vocal-chord system in their necks.

Additional Information

Social Structure

Colour is a very emotionally loaded concept to the Kryad, when compared to other Federation cultures. The expression of colour is considered to be an absolute ‘truth’ - because their communication reflex is directly tapped into their neural network, it is nearly impossible for a Kryad to reliably ‘lie’ about their emotional states. This naturally led to a lot of confusion upon encountering other Space Fairing species, but over the centuries they have managed to disentangle some of this mentality as they learnt different systems of communication.   Kryad are an incredibly trustworthy species, as one can nearly always guarantee what they say is absolute - for there is no way to lie. Those who are the rare exception to this rule conquer their reflexes through extensive training and make up the Kryadic spy network, some of the best agents in Federation Space.

Civilization and Culture

History

The Kryad evolved on the continental class planet Theron, from an omnivorous species of pack-hunter reptilians, similar in behaviour to wolves. Extensive social communication and coordination during hunting grew into sapient intelligence over time. The Kryad were the fourth species to join the Federation.
