The Enxetites Ethnicity in The Kingdom of Ntiklon | World Anvil

The Enxetites (En-he-tight)

The Enxetites are the native people of Enxë. In their own language, they call themselves either Enxëphonas or simply Ilo (the first means 'black soil people', the latter simply means humans). The Enxetites have lived in the lands of Enxë for as long as they have records. For the vast majority of said history, the Enxetites have ruled themselves. The Enxetites have been ruled over by a series of native-born Dynastic kingdoms, stretching back at least two to three thousand years. Just under three centuries ago came the conquest of the lands of Enxe by the Hursan Empire. Hursan rule lasted for 150 years or so, and at the start was relatively well liked. The early Hursan 'Emperors' were not focused on assimilation but integration and tolerated most native traditions (even following many of them).   This changed in the last 70 years and two Emperors. Both sovereigns shifted Imperial policy towards cultural assimilation and they pursued this aggressively across the realm. The native language of the Enxetites was suppressed, those native men who had climbed into positions of power were stripped of them in favor of Hursan appointees, and a series of pogroms against local traditions and worship was instituted. The last 70 years of Hursan rule over Enxë were thus very turbulent with frequent revolts, riots and attempts by local lords to oust the Hursan occupation of the country. There was some success in the deep interior of the country, far from the coast or the central river land, but little gain beyond that. When the Prophet made His arrival in the region, he sought out local leaders to determine what the situation was and begin organizing a proper resistance against the Hursan Empire.   Beyond the prior mentioned pogroms against the Enxetites, Imperial rule in the latter two Emperors had shifted to being cruel in its punishments as well.
