Social and Cultural Aspects of the Isles

This is a document containing notable social and cultural aspects of The Isles of Isaiath, it is intended as a brief rundown of potential social and cultural normalities that one could encounter during their travels to the Isles.

Social Relations between Races

Humans and Elves

It is well known that both humans and elves share a rather back and forth relationship in the Isles. When the humans first arrived in Isaiath and began construction of their first grand kingdom Titus, they initiated conflict with the Elves who already resided on the land. This lead to one of the most historical wars in the Isles history. Although the race of humans claimed victory, the causalities for both sides were unimaginable and the death of Prince Aedan Nurices crushed the spirit of the elven people.   Valuable land and powerful magical spell tomes were all stolen from the elven people, something that they can never forgive. This started a social feud between humans and elves as in the capital region of the Isles, The Crownlands most humans have a distinct hatred towards elves. The racism is strong in the neighbouring region of The Gold Plains and far less prevalent on the opposite side of the continent in The Eastlands. However there are still pockets of people in these anti elf regions who sympathise for their counterparts.

Humans and Dwarfs

Unlike the elves, humans don't hold an ancient grudge towards dwarfs, however there is still a large amount of animosity between the races due to the First and Third great wars, in which The Mountainside region natives engaged in conflict with both Tis'Envar and T'Rem.   A large amount of sophisticated humans actually respect dwarfs due to their great craftsmanship and ingenuity, leading to dwarfs being offered jobs in human regions as blacksmiths, shop keepers and manufacturers. Though there is no extreme hatred between the races, there is not much contact. Significant figures from human races rarely make the effort to keep in contact with their noble dwarven counterparts unless necessary.

Humans and Lesser Races

In regards to what humans consider lesser races, Gnomes, Halflings, Orcs, Lizardfolk, they see them as no real threat and thus pay little attention to their development. This is mainly due to the lack of significant land held by these races, Purude being held by House Urukax being the only notable location.   Gnomes and halflings are considered strange little creatures who pose no real threat in a combat situation and only exist to provide the lesser regions with population, humans are not directly racist towards them but see them as definitely lesser to themselves. In the most racist region of The Isles of Isaiath, The Crownlands, these little races are often made fun of, in the other regions however they are treated more appropriately.   In The Crownlands, orcs are seen as large dumb green men who didn't evolve into current humans, easily manipulated and outsmarted by a standard human. Useful for labour heavy jobs, they can find income in these sorts of occupations but never seen as equal, it is common that a human shop keeper will attempt to swindle an orc into buying more goods than necessary. The situation is quite similar in The Gold Plains but in The Eastlands Orcs are treated differently, seen as mighty warriors who can earn respect with courageous feats.   Lizardfolk may be one of the most respected lesser races in The Isles of Isaiath, although not a concern at the current moment, those within The Kings Court can see the race eventually rising and making themselves a significant player in the Isles. Seen as intelligent and dangerous, humans in The Crownlands tread carefully around lizardfolk as they fear the "monster men" may attempt to gain the upper hand on them in any situation as lustful creatures who desire supremacy over other races. A similar but less intense outlook is also existent in The Gold Plains.   In the The Eastlands, lizardfolk are a far more common sight and even hold their own city in the region, Purude. They are considered equals and very little people hold any grudges against them due to their racial differences, it is common for a lizardfolk to appear in most eastern cities.   Kenku, Tabaxi, Locathah and Goblins are the most uncommon races outside of Purude in The Isles of Isaiath. Similarly to other lesser races in both The Crownlands and The Gold Plains, these races are not considered equal although have the ability to live a poor life in these regions with the exception of goblins who are universally hated in these regions due to their mischievous nature.   On the opposite side of the continent in the The Eastlands, these lesser races are less discriminated against. Kenku are common traders in places such as Eldenham and Ausraluis. Both tabaxi and Locathah along with goblins are an uncommon sight outside of Purude and many humans believe that most of them live in The Crypt Lands Beyond Purude with the Saplots.

Dwarfs and Elves

Dwarfs and Elves were residents of The Isles of Isaiath long before mankind and lived passively with one another for centuries. There is no known record of elves or dwarfs holding extremely levels of racism towards each other in their native cities and thus are relatively passive towards each other. Although there are the occasional outliers in each race who show hate but it is uncommon. It is known that dwarfs living in The Crownlands or The Gold Plains can sometimes take on the beliefs of their human co-residents.

Dwarfs and Lesser Races

The term lesser races is not particularly common among dwarfs as they see some of these races as equal. The most obvious exception being orcs, who most dwarfs have a small amount of pentad up rage against. Orcs are often known to make jokes claiming that dwarfs are their little brothers who were not allowed to grow, although this is an old joke it has become a touchy topic for most dwarfs pride.   Gnomes and Halflings are seen as budget dwarfs and should respect the more dominant short race. This hasn't caused too much of a fuss but has lead to less opportunities for gnomes and halflings to succeed him dwarven society as they are not given equality when it comes to positional advancement in businesses.   The other lesser races are rarely in contact with dwarven society as Purude is one of the furthest cities from The Mountainside region. Thus leading to dwarven people not formulating many opinions on the Kenku, Goblin, Lizardfolk, Locathah or Tabaxi races. They assume that despite what Crownlands natives say, these are all respectable races.

Elves and Lesser Races

Elves are some of the most understanding residents of the Isles when it comes to lesser races, they accept that each race is a living creature which demands its own rights in an ever changing world and that having these rights is necessary to ensure a species survival. They view most of these races as respectable and would openly conduct negotiations with them if approached, the one exception being goblins.   Goblins have caused the elven people of The Forest region issues for many years, goblins enjoy harvesting goods and killing animals in the forest region to sustain their small villages scattered around the continent. They have attempted to engage in political discussions with the small humanoid creatures but have deemed them unintelligent as all contact has resulted in violence. Elves hold an open distain towards goblins and will kill any who attempt to enter the deepest areas of the forest region without some sort of reasonable evidence for their appearance.
