Seyak Material in The Infinite Otherworlds | World Anvil

Seyak

A material first found in the atmospheres of Mayam and Kmiyel, seyak has become an invaluable resource for the Concord and a major point of interest in the settlement of Kazed. Seyak can be found as solid in many typical earth-side environments and as a gas in the more pressure heavy environments of the gas giant Mayam. On Kmiyel, the cold and presence of volatile elements tend to focus seyak merging with extant liquids or otherwise form liquid deposits.   In its solid state, seyak tends to look like a glossy blend of stone and wood, though it is neither. The closest analog to seyak would be a very hard bone or claw chitin. While initially not seen as overly interesting, members of House Klavarien would discover several fascinating properties that changed perceptions around seyak. They found that when seyak is added to a biological construct as a shell or armor, said organism could resist damage that would normally pierce common armor and even substantially dissipate the kinetic force of said impact in place of normal cushioning. This peaked the interest of the material as an armor but the discoveries didn't stop there.   It's gas state showcased itself to be highly conductive when concentrated; even showing properties closer to a plasma even at low temperatures or with low voltages. This made the gaseous form valuable for various electrical power generation or storage that wasn't totally biological in nature. The liquid form likewise is a magnificent electrical conductor at a wide variety of temperatures which could alleviate some issues with existing drone and construct designs. Altogether, these and other properties led to House Klavarien gaining considerable influence as they were the ones spearheading the development of integrating seyak into extant bio-constructs. While they weren't able to firmly gain a monopoly (other Houses were able to gain their own sources of seyak and experiment), House Klavarien currently is the largest powerhouse in regards to products utilizing seyak. The substance is decently common throughout the system however extracting enough seyak for use in products tends to be difficult. As such, seyak has not replaced all extant bio-construct designs but has most certainly influenced innovation within the Kazed system's industries.
