Curse of the Fig Trees Myth in The Horizon | World Anvil

Curse of the Fig Trees

Once upon a time in a small village, a fig tree was found on edge of the land. The people cared for it in hopes to reap its fruits. But soon the fig tree grew, spread, and began taking over the village.   One young woman name Jihane took it upon herself to find a way to stop the massive growth of these trees. As a young child she remembers hearing stories of a great sand dragon consuming all the fig trees in the land. So she set out to find it to stop the village from being overrun.   For 50 days she walked away from the village to find signs of the majestic beast. One night as she was sitting around a campfire praying deeply to the Icons, a lizard came to visit her and spoke to her.
"If you wish to meet the great sand dragon, you are going to have to head north to cross a river without getting wet, find a tree that will speak back to you, and dig a deep hole at the edge of a swamp."
Taking the lizard's guidance, Jihane heads North towards the mountains the next day. After an hour of travel, she stumbles across a massive river with only a few pebbles along the shore. She looks up & down the river and see no signs of a bridge or ways of crossing without getting wet. There was nothing left to do so she resigned to pray to the Icons.   During her prayer, she was interrupted by soft noises in the water. She opens her eyes to see a large turtle in the water, its shell sticking upwards out of the water. As it swam by, more started to appear, a whole herd of turtles moving upstream. It was then that she realized that she could use their shells to get her across the river completely dry.   With ease she made her way across the river. When she reached the final turtle, it told her that she will never cross the river without its help so it required a toll.   Jihane decided that she had nothing to give the turtle but her knowledge and her wit. So she offered it the secret to human life. She kept it long and as the turtle got close enough to the shore, she jumped off the turtle without finishing the story.   Upset, the turtle curses her for failing to live up to her end of the bargain and curses her saying that she will never see her wish come true.   Not fearing the words of the turtle for she had the words of the lizard to follow, she continues her journey and eventually she comes across a grove. Knowing she has to speak with one of the trees, she starts approaching each one and talks to them. But with every tree she meets, there is only silence on the other end.   Just as she utters words to the last tree she begins to give up hope. She lifts her head and sees yet another grove but in the middle of them stands the largest tree she has ever see. Thinking on her feet, she rushes to the tree.   Jihane is determined to make her own luck and takes a sharp rock nearby and starts to carve out a large hole in the massive tree. It is at that point she begins yelling into the crevice she just created. Her voice resonates and the echo bounces back but differently. As she continues speaking the words the sounds begin to form directions, she makes note, hoping it leads to the swamp.   She wanders for days until finally coming to the swamp. She falls to her knees and with the rest of her strength, she begins to dig with her hands. The hole gets deeper and deeper until it gets too dark to see where she is digging. It is then she realized the hole has become so deep that she cannot get out.   With her mouth dried out, she yells out for help. After hours of screaming, the Sand Dragon appears at the entry of the hole. It looks down and speaks to her saying... "You have found me and I must do as you wish but there is no salvation for you."   The Sand Dragon flaps its wings to fly off to go eat all the fig trees taking over the village. In doing so, the winds from its wings flapping causes the sand at the top of the hole to fall in, collapsing and burying Jihane alive.
