Ma'at Character in The History and Future of Golarion | World Anvil

Ma'at

Nethys thinks the immortals having children is bad for a bunch of reasons   Frowns on it   Osiris and Isis really want kids   can't convieve, sad to be them   They're like hey Nethys maybe we can use our magical power to fix infertility   and Nethys is like -.-, there's lots of fertile people, population is already growing, it's not really a problem.   Isis is like, yes, but I want to be a mother.   And Nethys is like, as per my last email, Immortals being parents is a bad idea. Osiris and Isis disagree.   there's some accusations that because they were so intent to have kids and wanted Nethys' blessing, perhaps Nethys knew they would try and have kids anyway   Shay, god of divination and fate, did tell Nethys that one day they'd raise a child and if Shay said that, Nethys would believe it   So maybe NEthys cursed them to be infertile to stop them having a kid (It's a distraction don't you know? A good immortal needs to be focused on Osirion, a good parent needs to be focused on their child, therefore an immortal having a child is bad.)   Time passes, they don't have a kid.   Later, Osiris hears of this mortal woman, Ishtar, and she's going around causing a ruckus, she's very powerful and ambitious and she's even opposing some lesser immortals and doing a decent job at it.   What we do know is that He goes to her, recruits her as an immortal, and has a kid with her. It's not known what order the events happened in and how involved Isis was in the decision making, she claims to of been involved in the plan, but that could be to save face. What's clear is that she and Ishtar do not get along at all. Ishtar is the god of indulgence, wealth, ambition, sexual pleasure and other things, "Isis is the god of motherhood and healing, they don't mix well.   Osiris and Isis aim to raise this child, who they name Ma'at, to be a child that Nethys will appreciate, that will change his mind and stance on these issues, and hopefully result in him deciding to change his mind on fixing Isis' infertility.   They raise Ma'at in philosophy, to understand the mortals of Osirion, to be an advisor on virtue and morality. They have Ma'at spend time with the other gods like Ra, Mafdet, Easifuh, Shay, Azghaad etc and she's raised by the whole pantheon. In time more and more gods come to acknowledge her, and Azghaad and Nethys call on her for council. Her primary role is to educate the people of Osirion on what is virtuous.   Nethys ascends, goes insane, leaves, Azghaad leaves with him   Osiris is Pharaoh.   Let's start having kids and raising families he says   I think that Nethys was amazing, and he encouraged us into our specialisations, However the specialisations are driving us apart and Azghaad did a great job of having us work together But let's take that further, let's mix our ideas by having children and swapping them Also, let's fix this infertility problem   Now at this point, some of the gods had had a kid, but Nethys refused to make the kid immortal, so they'd gone through the pain of losing a child to old age, and this meant that they either relly wanted to do this, or really didn't want to go through that again.   The idea goes ahead   Except the gods agree that actually the investing the nation's resources into fixing infertility of Osiris or Isis is not a good call, so that bit of the plan doesn't progress.   This whole thing with the gods swapping children essentially started with Ma'at, who is the oldest of the pure mortal god children   back soon to tell you about what Ma'at believes   Ma'at is respected by pretty much everyone   One of the most liked gifs Gods* if not the most liked   Ma at is Anubis’ older brother because they’re both raised by isis and Osiris   Anubis is the judge   But you are judged by being compared to the teachings of ma at   Ma at taught Anubis these teachings   And Anubis grew up judging right and wrong by what his older brother said   Now Anubis works in the bone yard judging souls to see if they are true Osiriani back

So what does Ma'at believe?

Balance, harmony, working towards common goals but not always in the same ways or together   Ma'at says "There is a time for every action and aspect of existence within but all must be recognized and acted upon at appropriate times."   there is a time for defense and a time for attack   there is a time for honesty and a time for lies   so in one sense, Ma'at is an extremely tolarant god   there's a time for essentially everything   But in another way, not so tolerant, because there's this idea that there is a CORRECT time for everything.   it's not always ok to lie   it's just OK to lie   "Son of Osiris, born in part to demonstrate to Nethys the value of rearing children, Osiris raised Ma'at to be something Nethys would value, a wise considerer of the mortal condition and culture, a thing that greatly affected Nethys but was not a focus of his studies. Her birth irked Isis significantly, as she was unable to bear children, and Osiris slept with Ishtar. Ishtar would often use this sore spot to poke at Isis, and as a result Isis has a deep hatred for Ishtar. Ma'at saw the influence many had on their children. This opposition is part of balance, Set's evil drove Horus's goodness. Horus' honesty drove Set's deception. Set's deception drives my desire for truth. Without Set's Lies, I would not value honesty the way I do. Without my mother's sin, I would not value virtue."   There's a time for Set   a time and a place perhaps
For example, Set, the god who is good at associating and befriending the enemies of Osirion   the god who himself is Lawful evil and a kingslayer   Within the view of Ma'at, that's a perfect example of there being a time and place for everything   and you'd have no relationship and be worse of for it.   Sobek is an extremely violent god prone to outbursts of aggression   there's a time and a place for that guy   he's a deterrant, a creautre to fear   something that might be sent to deal with you if necessary   but Sobek spends most of his time sitting around lavishly enjoying the rewards of his service to the Pharoh   because most of the time is not the time for Sobek's agression   Sobek also was originally an enemy of Azghaad   there's a time and a place to recruit your enemies, Sobek was one of those times and the Sphinx river was such a place   (Sobek is from around Trinity, on the Sphinx river)   Our enemies seeing the luxury Sobek lives in can be good because it's a possible future for them if they play their cards right
