Mazarie

Mazarie are the agrarian and extractive laborers of the Merchant Republic of Sahraʾ, occupying the second tier in its rigid social hierarchy immediately above the Muharib (mercenary warriors) and below the Harfiūn (artisans). Tasked with farming fertile oases, harvesting timber in jungle fringes, and mining mineral deposits in desert highlands, Mazarie supply the raw materials that underpin Sahraʾ’s vast merchant economy. Although essential to the republic’s prosperity, they lack direct avenues for upward mobility—advancement requires investing in their children’s education through costly apprenticeships under wealthy merchant sponsors.   In Sahraʾ’s patrimonial system, each Mazarie family typically dedicates its eldest offspring to one of three primary trades—agriculture, mining, or forestry—fostering specialized guilds and local customs around each vocation. While their social status is limited by birth, Mazarie benefit from communal rights to arable land or forest tracts, binding them to regionally administered estates overseen by higher merchant authorities. Through seasonal cycles of planting, harvest, and extraction, they form the indispensable foundation upon which the republic’s caravans, bazaars, and grand palaces are built.
