Karl

Karl (plural: karls) is a social class in the High Kingdom of Fjallheima, representing free commoners who form the backbone of the kingdom’s society. Traditionally, karls are landowning peasants, farmers, miners, craftsmen, and traders, distinguished from the noble classes (jarls, thanes, and housekarls) by their lack of hereditary titles or direct political authority. Despite this, karls enjoy personal freedoms and the right to participate in local Things (assemblies), where they may voice opinions on law, justice, and governance. In times of conflict, karls are expected to serve as levied warriors, providing manpower for the jarldoms’ armies. The class is central to the economic, military, and cultural life of Fjallheima, underpinning both its agricultural productivity and artisanal traditions.
