High Jarl

The High Jarl is the title given to the rulers of the four principal provinces, or High Jarldoms, of the High Kingdom of Fjallheima. Serving directly beneath the High King, each High Jarl governs a vast territory composed of multiple subordinate jarldoms, overseeing matters of governance, justice, defense, and tribute within their domain. High Jarls wield considerable political and military influence, presiding over regional assemblies (Things), administering local law, and leading their province’s warriors both in peace and in times of war. They play a crucial role in the kingdom’s elective monarchy, each holding multiple votes in the Althing that selects the High King. Traditionally hailing from the most prominent noble lineages and renowned for martial prowess as well as administrative skill, High Jarls act as both regional governors and key pillars of Fjallheima’s feudal society.
