Mechanics & Inner Workings

Devilishly simply, these are buried just under the surface of loose ground, or simply tossed in tall vegetation to disguise them. All that need happen is the unsuspecting victim to put their weight on it to puncture and immobilize them.

History

These weapons exist in some extent across the continent. However, they exist in modern eras as a uniquely Huronian mindset for the use of the weapon. They were first used during the Dwarven excursions in the late 100's, during this time Dwarves having not been well known about in the region of Ilori Sea , were taken for invaders from Mhuzelt.   They were used as Area of denial weapons that were capable of puncturing the thick leather boots the Dwarves used. While it was effective at the time, they adapted quickly to create sweepers. These were capable of removing the hazard almost completely.   They have been used in almost every military engagement the City State has fought in. Leading the Huronian Military to adopt their emblem to be a Griffin holding a Caltrop in it's claws.

Significance

They have become a staple armament in the plains of the middle continent. These being passive objects, they continue to act as an effective deterrent, even long after the conflict they were used in has passed. This has become an issue in recent histories, where scholars and enthusiasts need to make precautions to find these objects before entering ruined forts or old battlefields.   While they remain effective at their task, many criticize that they may be a little too effective. During the late 900's the composition of their metal switched from iron to a more corrosion resistant material capable of lasting upwards to a century before fully rusting away.
"We are sure we found them all?   "Nope, but we'll know if we haven't. To be frankly honest, I'd rather not deal with it, avoid this field altogether"
