Showing up one day at the Vault Crawler with little more than a numberless blue Vault suit, he has spent the better part of forty years building himself a humble empire of dust and sheet metal. It is clear to most he suffers from amnesia, although he does invent some wild stories to replace the gaps in his mind for the general public. The most prevalent is that he was not born to any human parents, he says he was born by the Dust Bowl herself. A little off, he still proved himself to be quite industrious once he settled under the roving platform.

Spending his time creating a monopoly over the scavengers and the food being brought down from the Crawler, he was able to fund his own mercenary security force. These brutish negotiators had no trouble installing Thompson as the 'Mayor' of the little shanty towns that usually form when the behemoth stops for extended maintenance. Those that pay for protection through caps or service exchanges enjoy relative safety in Undercity, however outsiders that are just passing through are not so lucky.

Old Man Thompson's goons are as likely to rob travelers as common bandits in the form of adjustable tolls and fines. A blind eye is turned so long as kickbacks are sent up the chain. The proceeds are often used to purchase better food and basic needs for the mercenaries, which helps keep them from tagging along on the next caravan for higher risks and rewards. Old Man Thompson has a zero-tolerance policy for chem use in his operation, and it is a quick way for an outsider to get on his bad side by displaying addictive behaviors.
