The Mysterious Highwayman
Among the stories passed around over a drink, this is one that is quite fantastical. A group of escaped slaves claim they would never have made it to the Vault Crawler without some special assistance. They say the incident happened after they had found a way to shed their collars and steal a working vehicle. Unfortunately, they alerted the guards during their escape and had a slaver overlord hot on their heels long before they could make it to safety.
While frantically trying to outmaneuver and outpace their pursuers, three of the five insist they saw a pre-war car come out of nowhere to save their skins. It was a tan Highwayman, in absolutely pristine condition with a driver that wore a fedora and trench coat of similar color and quality. He fired only one shot from his oversized revolver during the entire event, right through his open passenger side window with deadly accuracy.
It is said this bullet decapitated the slaver leader, sending everything above his bottom jaw into the windshield of the car behind him. This sudden attack spooked the rest of the hunting party and sent them turning back to the safety of their home. Oddly enough when the survivors turned to thank their mysterious ally, they could find no trace of him or his car. Before any sense could be made from it, they managed to arrive at the Crawler and find asylum, leaving the blanks to be filled in by rumors and conjecture.
