Revenant Host Species in The Great Dust Bowl | World Anvil

Revenant Host

The victims from the first series of trials performed by Zander Drake, these abominations are actually corpses that have been reanimated with the use of advanced technology. There is little uniformity in their design, and it seems like a myriad of theories were put to the test in crude fashion to gather data for the next generation of cyborg. Although by no means clumsy or simple-minded, they rely on machines to calculate their thinking process and thus are limited to the AI that is installed to their hard drive. Having gone through innumerous changes to this source code during each separate build, they can be extremely unpredictable and hard to develop a singular tactic to defeat. Even more disturbing is the habit of using previous memories to confuse enemies and open them up for an attack.

While equipment varies between each Host, few have much beyond what is mounted to their bodies. Survivors that have encountered them claim to suffer from severe migraines and fatigue in the days following the attack. Further investigation revealed evidence of brain injuries in the majority of these patients, with some requiring emergency surgery to drain the excess fluids before they caused any life-long complications. Other symptoms have been reported but are regularly dismissed as circumstantial due to the nature of the traumatic experiences in general. They include insomnia, nightmares, sleep paralysis, and episodes of extended sleep walking. Regardless of how pragmatic each doctor attempts to be, they all have trouble explaining away the fact that all those affected share the same sinister testimonies.

To reconstitute themselves after an injury, a Host will harvest fresh organic matter and circuitry from anywhere they can find it. Though this trait often earns them the moniker of 'zombie', the tissues and mechanical parts assimilated are never actually ingested. They are instead used to create patches to the biological suit, new limbs, and even organs. This not only increases the diversity between each cybernetic organism, but also makes repeated fights with the same entity progressively more difficult. This is not to say that a myriad of original design flaws doesn't hamper many of these creatures. Most suffer from improperly preserved biomatter, leading to a premature putrification of cells and a constant need to cannibalize robotics or genetic material to compensate for the loss of functionality. Without access to fresh materials, the majority of Revenants will shut down and go into a stasis mode within as little as a month's time. This will appear to most as a complete hibernation, however the sensors and still very much active, and will continue to search for prey while the creature is immobile. They have also been known to hijack other creatures for their own designs; Bloatfly nymphs feasting on their decaying flesh often carry away small trackers that will mark other places where the insect stops, likely leading a Host to any other carcasses in the immediate area.
