Map of Hollow Mountain
Hollow Mountain is one of the Steads of the Eye most shrouded in mystery and myth. Home of the Eldar, the Dwarves, the Gnomes, the Duergar, the Svirfneblin, and the Drow.
Broadly speaking, Hollow Mountain can be separated into three regions. The Skykarsts, small floating mountain-islands that slowly orbit the peak of the primary mountain, the Stoneheath, the surface-level mountains, and the Underdark, that which sits below "Stead-level," and contains a twisting network of caverns.
The Skykarsts
Home of the Eldar, and rumored to have been once part of the Stoneheath, before they were magically split from the main island and raised to their current altitude (in violation of the Fifth Commandment of Stonelaw). The six Skykarsts slowly orbit the peak of Hollow Mountain, and their communities are built primarily at surface level.
The Stoneheath
Home of the Dwarves and Gnomes. Most communities sit within the mountains of Stoneheath rather than on the surface.
The Underdark
Home of the Duergar, the Svirfneblin, and the Drow. Separated into two primarily layers, the Upper Underdark and the Lower Underdark. The Upper Underdark is a vast network of sprawling caverns and contains most Duergar settlements, including the fortresses that guard the entrances to the Underdark, and its primary line of defense against Dwarven incursion. The Lower Underdark is a series of enormous caverns, each of which has multiple step-like levels, and some of which are large enough to contain underwater seas and massive lakes. The Lower Underdark is the home of the Drow, and the location of their primary city, Cenn Cael. However, venture out away from the main caverns, and you will encounter far more dangerous and unpredictable creatures. The Lower Underdark is not a place for the faint of heart.
