The Hippocampus

You find yourself, on this late summer afternoon, entering a tavern facing the docks. The wooden sign swinging in the sea breeze above the door boasts a brightly colored carving of a rearing horse with the tail of a fish, and bold letters above it declare to all who can read Common that this establishment is the Hippocampus. Colloquially, it is known as the Salty Mare, though no one who's been in town long enough to know would dream of letting the proprietor catch them calling it that...

The Hippcampus is a tavern and inn located in Naddred's Harbor District just off the docks. Though unassuming from the outside and far from the height of elegance, it's something of a local institution. The owner and bartender, Brigid, is well known and loved in the Harbor District and the Rookery; locals know that they can count on a bowl of something nourishing at her bar, even if they don't have a copper to their name.

The building consists of a main bar and dining area, a large kitchen, four rooms for rent, and rooms for the staff.

Architecture

Much of the work done on restoring the building seems to have been done so with pieces of old ships and sailing equipment. The bar looks to have been made from wood salvaged from a ship's deck and is taller than standard, with a series of short steps on one side that lets smaller patrons approach the bar. The tavern is lit by ships' lanterns lining the walls, which all appear to have been collected from different ships, and a chandelier consisting of nothing but a ship's wheel with candles stuck around the rim hangs in the middle of the ceiling. The tables and chairs are all missmatched, and the walls are lined with old astrolabes and captains maps and other sailing equipment. In pride of place on the wall behind the bar is a salvaged figurehead, depicting the same sort of mer-horse as on the sign.

History

Bought by Brigid after she retired from the fighting circuit, the old building used to house a warehouse, and needed a lot of work before it was fit to be a tavern.
