Naddred

Welcome to Naddred; the gateway to the Five Cities on Dararen's western coast. She steams gently in the muggy Summer air, her many canals afloat with gondolas and barges and glittering in the high, hot sun. Down here, near the docks, the walkways are narrow and crowded and crisscross the canals on wood and rope bridges that sway and creak rather alarmingly under the tread of an endless stream of feet. You can hear the high, sharp call of sailors in the harbor, calling down from the rigging and the decks as they load and unload cargo, mingling with the piercing cry of the gulls wheeling above you against the impossibly blue sky...

Demographics

Being a port city, Naddred boasts a wider range of far flung folk than the other cities. It's the only city with a Lizardfolk population of any size, due to conflicts with the city of Dia over their ancestral lands in the southern swamps driving them up the coast and forcing them to take refuge in the city. Halflings, being largely a seafaring people, are well represented in the docks district, and Orcs, Goblinoids, and other marginalized races make up a large portion of those living in the Rookery. Humans and Elves make up a large proportion of the upper echelons of society.

Government

Like each of the Five Cities Naddred is ruled by a Prince, elected by the Mages Council. Recently, however, the political climate in the port city has been especially gossip-filled (though Naddred politics has never been free of scandal). The city's current Prince, recently elected Prince Geordy Pendleghast, is remarkably young for the position; so young that some accuse him of buying the throne. As usual, many are assuming that the Thieves Guild is behind it.

Uniquely, Naddred is the only City in Daearen in which prostitution, gambling, and blood sports are legal. This has made the port something of a vice enthusiast's destination, and tourists from all over the world flock to The Red Lantern District for a little action.

As in the other Cities, during City-wide elections in Naddred the votes of a Mage count the same as 1 1/2 votes from a non-magical citizen.

Defences

Naddred is surrounded on three sides by a high stone wall, dotted with towers. On the fourth side is the harbor, and the curve of the coast provides the city with a natural defense against attack by sea. A stone keep overlooks the city from a nearby hill.

Industry & Trade

The main port of the five cities, Naddred makes a great deal of money through trade, shipping, and fishing. However, the "tourist" or, more accurately, "vice" trade is just as robust, and it's likely that the money flowing into the city's brothels, casinos, and arenas make up an even larger portion of Naddred's wealth.

Infrastructure

Streets that can accommodate carts are somewhat rare in Naddred; instead, the city is crisscrossed by canals, the citizens using walkways or boats steered by long poles to get around. Merchants sell their wares from shop barges at the Floating Market, and it all flows into the city from the expansive harbor, through which hundreds of ships pass daily.

Guilds and Factions

It's widely rumored that Naddred is the seat of a continent-wide Thieves Guild , and if you desire something rare of questionable legality all you need do is find one of their fabled Black Markets. And be ready to pay handsomely, of course. Finding the markets however, is the hard part.

History

Legend says that Naddred was founded by pirates. The truth of this is debatable, but the local culture makes it fairly believable.

Architecture

The respectable parts of the city are largely multi-story buildings with white stucco walls, painted with bright murals or decorated with frescoes. In the poorer districts, the buildings are mostly wooden, and often covered with mold thanks to the warm, humid climate.

Geography

Located near the mouth of the Anderloss River, Naddred takes full advantage of being built on a natural cove.
