The Dewberry Festival

In the Grief-Stricken Forest grows a plant called the Eldergarrow. This plant grows only in sunlit patches found where the closely grouped trees grow apart, leaving a space about 6-8 feet. The ground underneath an Eldergarrow feels soft and supple and weeds will not take root there, nor any invasive or barbed shrub. The locals call the ground sacred. They believe that carrying ground from the Eldergarrow plant will grant them protection from ghosts and other supernatural entities.   The Eldergarrow plant is known to bloom every 3 years. This holds true for all Eldergarrow, regardless of when the plant took root, as if all Eldergarrow respond to the same condition at the same time. The bloom produces an exceptional fruit that is plump, juicy, and possesses a deep bluish-pink hue. The fruit has a sugary and sweet taste that is rich. The berry-like fruit is called the dewberry as it is so rich and juicy to the taste.   The people of Beldam gather in groups after the Eldergarrow Bloom and reverently collect the berries for several days. The berries are used to make pies, tarts, jellies, jams, and other treats. The most famous application is its use in the creation of Dewberry Wine. Dewberry wine is held in high regard for its delicious taste and smoothness. It is a potent wine and a fixed feature of the Dewberry Festival held 4 weeks after the last winter frost.   The Festival starts at 11:00am and runs till sunrise the next day. Pageants, plays, concerts, games, contests, and dances are held throughout the land. Children traditionally dress as pixies, sprites, fairies, elves, and other woodland creatures. Hunting and fishing are strictly forbidden that day as well as the milking of animals or the collection of their eggs. The local churches and city Cathedrals provide new clothes and shoes to the poor and host a magnificent feast for all that lasts from 6pm until 10pm. The Dewberry Festival is considered a celebration of the most beloved and enjoyed berry, which blooms across and only Beldam, once every three years during the last winter frost.
