Spirit World Cookbook

This document will be filled with recipe as the expedition progresses. Each culinary recipe will list some ingredients, the location it was discovered, and the noticed effect of the meal.
Dinner, Nurend 04, 308: Monkey and Vegetable Stew
After a long day of exploring and seeking out water, the Spiritual Travelers settled down for some dinner and well-earned rest. Frode prepared a delicious meal utilizing the recently butchered monkey provided by Kaswink and some vegetables that had been harvested by DAN. Amongst these vegetables was a particularly peculiar potato which corkscrewed around and provided feelings of general discomfort. Despite this, the potato was still broken apart by Kaswink and added to the pot.   The meal was particularly good, despite the unusual ingredients, and nobody seemed to notice any immediate issues. The benefits or negative effects of the stew have yet to be discovered.
  • Meat from two Multi-Monkeys.
  • Fresh Vegetables (potatoes, onions, celery were found nearby)
  • A corkscrew potato
  • Water from the nearby creek

Break - Mistletoe Tea - After trudging through the snowy forest nothing staves off exhaustion quite like some nice hot tea. DAN was able to find some Mistletoe growing from some nearby apple trees. Supposedly it helps with joints along with a load of other benefits, and the Spirit World varient lives up to these empty promises of the material plane. Boiled it with some floral plants that were acquired along the way, some left over tea leaves, made enough for everyone to relax and warm up a bit before the rest of the journey.
  • Mistletoe, a sprig per person to be served.
  • Some crushed flowers and their stems
  • A bit of left over black tea

Evening Breakfast - BEAR - Nothing quite cures the aches and pains of a long cold day like copious amounts of protein, fat and carbs. The delightful warmth that comes from a well seasoned egg and bowl of rice coupled with slices of bacon dripping with fat, and completed with sliced avocado. Not everyone seemed to enjoy the rice and avocado, but that's perfectly alright. Almost used that Mysterious Herb, but DAN prevented such things.
  • One Adderfowl egg per person.
  • Half a Dragonscale Avocado, or "Agavecado" per person
  • A small, filled bowl of rice per person
  • salt and pepper to taste, add any other seasonings you might like, and any other vegetables too!
It was observed that after eating even just the eggs and bacon, that Hysteria was cured of any exhaustion that they had accumulated, and they seemed even more invigorated that usual. Those of us that ate the Avocados seemed even more resilient... we've yet to fully observe what advantages it might provide though, really. All of these ingredients were found near the camp at the creek, and thanks to the extra rice we should be able to grow more, and our newly acquired adderfowl will provide eggs for years.

Sweet Kale Salad and Vine Boar Chops - Sometimes you need something a little lighter, something to really lift the spirits of those you care for, and sometimes you need to pair that lighter something with a delicious pork chop because there's a carnivorous elf that's traveling with you and they might want something to eat too.
  • Sweet Kale Salad - Simply toss a handful of sweet kale with a bit of salt and wildberry vinaigrette. Plate and garnish with roasted vinebeast seeds.
  • Vine Boar Chops - Divide up the remaining cuts of vine boar meat and render some of the discarded fat into a pan to begin braising. Sear both sides of the pork chops on the hot and oiled pan with preferred seasonings, add just enough water to cover the bottom of the pan, then cover and cook a good distance away from the campfire so that minimal heat is applied. After an hour a deliciously tender cut of pork will be surrounded in its own juices along with the joined efforts of your vegetable choices and seasoning.
The vine-beast meat and seeds did provide some additional resistance to poison, and, honestly, the seeds might've been enough to fill someone on their own, but the meal was exceptionally good.   Save the Veggies Relish - We've collected quite a few veggies throughout the days for different dishes, study and so forth. As time passes the best way to preserve some old vegetables is to pickle them. A fun way to pickle them is to chop various vegetables to different degrees of fineness and add some vinegar, herbs, and sweetener if desired. Here in the spirit world there are a few ways to either make your own vinegar using wine, making wine, making ales, or one could simply purchase vinegar from The Citizens of Greed or any other merchant.

Creamy Rabbit Curry - Wandering through a strange hell maze and then being stranded in a strange new world full of dangerous spirits and monsters can be known to make one crave meals they've never really craved before. Spicy foods might not be for everyone, but thankfully this dish, while spicy, is strangely delicious even to those that may not like spicy foods. That being said, it may be advised to speak with your group before adding too many spicy ingredients as it is often better to not let anything go to waste.
  • One average sized Orchit
  • One Spicy Orange Shallot
  • One wild potato per person
  • Curry Spices (4 parts coriander, 4 parts cumin, 3 parts turmeric, 4 parts ginger, 2 parts mustard, 1 part pepper, 2 parts cinnamon, 1 part cardamom, 1 part cayenne), if you have a Collapsing Spice Rack it'll do the work for you!
  • Coconut Milk (they seem to grow from trees here, and making them into milk is pretty easy!)
Begin by skinning the rabbit and roughly dicing the shallot. Add them and any desired herbs such as Thyme or Spais to a stock pot and cover it all with water. Suspend over a campfire or other heat source far enough away that the water begins to simmer. Maintain that heat for about an hour or two until the meat is cooked. The rabbit meat can then be easily removed from the bones. Set the bones aside to make bone broth if desired, and utilize the stock and onions as the water base for a curry stew!   Boil the potatoes in some of the stock along with the desired amounts of the curry ratio and some coconut milk. Dice the cooked rabbit meat and reintroduce it to the pot. It can then be served!   The Orchit (rabbit) had a rather pleasant floral sense...it was sort of aromatic, but it carried over into the flavor of the whole dish and complimented the other seasonings and spices quite well. Hopefully more can be found for additional meals. After enjoying this meal it felt like I could work for several more hours, it was incredibly invigorating, and the orchit also seemed to have some medicinal-like qualities. I'm not sure of the extent of what it could heal, but it may be worth looking in to by either the botanist or apothecarist.

Breakfast Sandwiches - A rather simple recipe, though incredibly delicious and a great way to wake up. The hardest part was obviously making the rye bread, but thankfully DAN had found a source of rye and the Collapsing Spice Rack that Kaswink purchased also has other pantry items like baking powder and baking soda! All that remained was grinding the rye into a flour, combining the necessary ingredients (flour, salt, baking powder and warm water), and "Baking"! While we don't yet have an oven, we do have a camp and some pans that could simulate the hot interior of an oven. Some careful positioning later and a nice loaf of rye bread was born!
  • Adderhen Eggs
  • Avocado
  • Some mundane white Onions that DAN found
  • two slices of rye bread toasted in a pan
Aside from the usual exhaustion remedy that seems to come with the adderhen eggs and the ...durability? increased fortitude? that comes with those avocados, this was mostly just a delicious breakfast with the most notable side effect being used to fuel a hard day's work.
Nurend 09, 308
Eyjandish Eggs - There are few things in the world better than breakfast food, and Eyjandish Eggs are some of the greatest, yet most challenging, breakfast foods one could possibly hope to attempt to make.
  • Adderhen Eggs, one per person, soft boiled
  • Ground vineboar sausage, or whatever meat you might happen to have available. It's recommended you season this to taste depending on the individual. After making this sausage, gently wrap a thin amount of it around a peeled soft-boiled egg. This ball of meat and egg can then be "baked" through a delicate pan postioning over a fire...
  • Carrot puree - simply boil carrots in enough water to cover them along with some butter and salt. When they're soft, mash them until smooth. You may need to add or remove water depending on consistency reached. Spread a small amount on a plate for the egg to sit on.
  • Basil and Green Onions, but they're red- finely chopped, sprinkle over the egg and carrot as a garnish.
  • Add any additional seasonings or sauces to taste
While these are normally breaded, they did turn out just fine. A tasty breakfast, it's like an egg and sausage but with a lot of extra and complicated steps that aren't super necessary. It seemed to provide some extra protection while working, almost as though a few temporary hit points had been gained or something. Additionally, the meal was likely to blame for certain heightened senses, particularly vision.

Thyme and Spais Tunneling Pheasant - A fairly straightforward and simple recipe. Simply roast some Tunneling Pheasant with your usual salt, pepper, along with some thyme and spais. If you have lemons, then some lemon juice and slice up lemon would also be a welcome addition while it cooks. Served on a smear of avocado puree with a side of mashed wild potatoes. A delightful, colorful dish with simple though delicious flavors. A classic, really, with the added benefit of this strange spirit world herb, Spais.   Benefits of this dish include feeling full, not going hungry, and the tunneling pheasant meat seemed to cause some temporary pebble-like welts to form. They don't seem to be painful or dangerous though, and might provide an extra layer of protection like armor.

Muddy Creek Muckfish and Chips - Nothing says home quite like some fried fish and chips. Kaswink was able to apprehend a rather nasty looking specimen that actually ended up smelling and tasting incredibly mild. It was prepared with a simple seasoning rub, fried with some wedged wild potatoes, and served with a side of red pepper ketchup, tartar sauce and some malt vinegar that we purchased from the citizens of greed.
  • Muddy Creek Muckfish - The most tender and delicious portion of the fish appears to be the tail. Cutting fillets into easy to hold pieces, two per person, and rubbing them with a combination of garlic, salt, pepper, and breadcrumbs if available. This can then be fried, though it is recommended you have the potatoes mostly finished before starting the fish.
  • Wild Potatoes - wedged and seasoned with whatever herbs and spices you are desiring, simple fried potatoes would just be salt and pepper, maybe some garlic.
  • Red Pepper Ketchup - four bell peppers (ideally red), 12 oz of red wine vinegar, 2 onions (as mundane as possible, we used white), two spicy peppers, some thyme, sugar (if you don't have sugar, honey or molasses works), salt and pepper
  • Tartar Sauce - utilizes the relish that has been sitting and doing pickle stuff for the past few days and some homemade mayo. To make the may simply combine adderhen eggs and oil and whisk feriously until mayo appears.
  • Malt Vinnegar - can be purchased from Citizens of Greed, maybe other vendors exist? Malt Vinegar could also be made as part of the brewing process for certain ales and beers. After the ale is fermented it can be fermented again to make vinegar. This process obviously takes much longer than handing some salesmen a few sentimental objects.
It's wild how complicated such a simple taste of home can become when you have to make everything by hand. Benefits of this dish include the usual sense of fullness that comes from most spirit world meat, and the accomplishment of it all is also rather enticing. The muckfish's own rotational movement and apparent need to escape certain predators seems to have transferred through its calories... I feel more alert after this meal, on guard.
Nurend 12, 308
Tunneling Pheasant Burgers - Thanks to yesterday's efforts, we now have mayo and ketchup. Thankfully these can be applied to more than just one meal and so we ground up some Tunneling Pheasant into burgers, mixed in some salt, pepper, garlic, dried onions, and some smoke powder...a remarkable ingredient similar to liquid smoke which I had never heard of until finding it in the spice rack. The meat was then formed into patties so that there was enough for one person each, and we made some rye bread buns with a similar recipe as the bread but in roll form. Wild Potato fries were also made, delicious and simple recipe! Though only if you happen to have already spent time on the otherwise convoluted ingredients.   Similar to the last time we enjoyed this tunneling pheasant, its meat provided those same strange pebble-like growths which we were able to confirm do provide some protection.
Nurend 15, 308 - Hibiscus Tea
Observed and enjoyed some special Hibiscus Tea as made by the Old Woman in her Cottage. Not much of a recipe, but sometimes the simplest things can be the most enjoyable. All it took was some boiled water, some hibiscus and some time. Oh, and friends to share it with while interviewing a weird old woman.
Nurend 16, 308 - Death Blossoms with mashed Sweet and Spicy Potatoes
Hoping to heal the horrible agony inflicted by those dreadful plants, we've taken to boiling their petals in water to make an infusion and using that to boil these strange purple and green Potatoes we found in the swamp. Mashed it up and made a nice meal to last us a few more hours. The flowers cured their own ailments just as Agave predicted, and we're mostly feeling a lot better.
Nurend 17, 308 (Day) - Fried Fish and Potatoes
Finally, the taste of home and it's being shared with a new froggy friend. Bought some russets from a creature Hysteria called a "Fae" and made a delicious meal. Simple, the trick is to cut the potatoes really thin to make them nice and crispy. I told him about how my family, especially the kids, love to eat this and other fried foods. Glad that we have a way to make such nostalgic items here and it isn't all just crazy nonsense.   Blueberry and Fly Pancakes - In that same town of Aotri we also all enjoyed some blueberry and fly pancakes. I imagine the batter is your average pancake batter and there was an interesting puree between the layers of pancake. They also garnished it with fresh blueberries and a still living fly struggling for its life... The menu described them as "Hearty blueberry pancakes separated by, and topped with, a layer of fly and blueberry puree made from fresh cream, cream cheese, sugar and a hint of salt."
Nurend 17, 308 (Night) - Vegetarian Chili
Passed by a chili truck, the person operating it claimed to have the best chili in town with a most variety and heat. Kaswink got the spiciest most bug-filled bowl while the rest of us just got vegetarian. Seemed to be your average chili, just seared vegetables like onions and peppers added to a stockpot of cooked beans, stewed tomatoes, and lots of different spices. It was delicious, but nothing special, though it is good to know that you can make familiar chili pretty easily in this realm. Apparently the other varieties also used some unusual though intriguing ingredients like something called "Firetrout Eggs". Would love to try frying a firetrout someday.
