Personal history
The tragic figure known as Steps-On-Sand started life with name Shigei Waneda, of the Waneda Clan, on the moon of Toril, which orbits a gas giant Chumbar VII, within the Dracos Shogunate. As with all clans within the Shogunate, the Waneda clan paid homage to the Hidora clan, and angled for greater power within the Shogunate. In this, they were thwarted by the powerful Suzume Clan, which held governorship over Toril.
Shigei grew strong and lean, learning combat to join her house’s warriors, but in regular matches against the Suzume, Waneda warriors came up short. Their multiple hatching grounds and massive wealth ensured they always had more, better equipped warriors. It caused Shigei great shame every time she lost to a Suzume.
As she reached young adulthood, she was approached by a human mercenary named David Tracer. He had a plan to increase the holdings of the Waneda by breaking into one of the more remote hatching grounds of the Suzume and stealing their eggs. Shigei agreed; it was a massive sum of money, and she was convinced that her actions would allow the Waneda to finally overcome the Suzume on Toril.
The raid went off successfully, but Shigei was caught and the plan went to hell. In orbital space, Draconian fighters headed off the mercenary cargo ship, preventing it from making it to hyperspace. In an attempt to avoid punishment, mercenary fighters blew up their own cargo freighter to destroy the evidence, and the lagart young. Tracer and his lieutenants managed to escape, but Shigei and the ground team were captured.
The other Waneda Lagarts that Shigei had recruited committed ritual suicide. However, Shigei chose to live. She was tried and convicted, but the Shogunate and Suzume demanded local justice. The Waneda Clan leader was required to cut off her tail, before the Draconian agent cut off hers. Thus, Shigei was cut off from her heritage, clan and people. She was banished from Draconian worlds and denied permission to walk the pilgrimage path of Okaga on Wakusekai.
Shigei wandered the outer rim planets, lost and desolate. On an unnamed desert world, she gave up and lay down in the sand. It was then that she met her master, a Master Shepherd known as the Dark Lady. She taught Shigei how to funnel her power and ultimately turned her into a Shepherd. The focus was on physical combat and channel her mystical powers through her spirit blade. She shed her name and chose the moniker Steps On Sand. At the same time, she took her vows to Larani and became a Contrition Knight.
Stern, unsmiling and serious, Steps on Sand is a female tailless Lagart Shepherd who follows the Path of the ReBorn.
