A stern and unsmiling man, Lord Admiral Paul Marik of Ulysses is the latest in a long line of Mariks - literally. As the Supreme Commander of the Imperial Armed Forces, Lord Admiral Marik is one of the Imperial Electors who will vote to choose the next Emperor during any time of succession.

Personal history
The Marik family is no longer a true family, but a collection of genetic clones. The original Marik, Lt. Commander Andres Marik, was part of the special projects division during the waning days of the Republic. As his military unit collapsed, Andres Marik escaped with 10 cloning vats and hid out in his family’s estate on Ulysses. Once there, he began to create a company of clones of himself and his twin sister, Antoinette.
As Empire established itself and put out a call for former military leaders, Andres Marik signed back up and quickly rose in ranks. As the clones grew to adulthood, they also joined the Imperial military. The clones were sterile but had surprisingly inherited a Marik family trait: a minor psychic ability to sense all other Marik clones.
Before too long, Andres Marik was promoted to Supreme Commander of Imperial Forces. As the clones began advancing through the ranks, Andres put them in positions of authority. By the time his actions were noticed, fully one quarter of all command officers were Mariks. An agreement was reached between the Emperor and the Marik “family”: the Mariks could remain in control of the military in exchange for complete obedience to the Imperial throne built into the clone’s matrix.
During the Second Dark Age, the Mariks remained loyal to the Imperial throne and the person occupying it, even during times of civil war. When Grenion Stuart took the Imperial throne, the Mariks were the first to swear fealty. For their loyalty, Emperor Grenion added the Supreme Commander of Imperial Forces to the electors of the Emperor, with the expectation that a Marik would always occupy that position.
A typical member of the Marik family, Paul Marik grew up Ulysses and entered the Imperial Military Academy when he reached the age of majority. From there he rose steadily through the ranks, benefiting from his family connections and his superior strategic skill. He reached the rank of Admiral early and from there, politicked for the position of Supreme Commander. He was an early advocate for installing the ansible on every military starship, and has focused the War College on designing military maneuvers that rely upon the device in create greater and more intricate military movement and attack patterns than were possible before the device's invention. He is in most ways the perfect military commander - calculating, far-thinking, and capable of adapting to changed circumstances.
Recently, he and other members of the Marik clone family have openly wondered if the best way to serve the Empire would be to have a Marik on the Iridium throne. They say it quietly, in whispers in the barracks and on command ships, but at the death of the current Emperor, many expect Paul Marik to stand and announce himself a candidate to be named the next Emperor of the galaxy.
