Elector Prince Maximillian Jian, Defender of the Chezun Protectorate
Mental characteristics
Personal history
Maximillian Jian was born into power, but even during his youth, anyone could see the power of his noble House was fading. During his childhood, his grandmother Ludmilla Jian led the family, and Maximillian watched her pit her sons against one another to vie for her attention and favor, even as she schooled her family that they were superior.
As a teenager, Maximillian watched his father go slowly insane from the pressures placed upon as the presumptive heir. His father, Wilfred Jian, had gambled much of his influence on several ventures, all of which had failed. Worse, his wife Nyneve, who had shown herself to be a strong woman and stabilizing influence over her husband, had been assassinated years before. Official blame was placed on the Vaar Thal Syndicate (and by unspoken implication, House Hidora), but rumors persist that Wilfred's brother Peter Jian was actually behind the plot.
Before he came of age, Maximillian's father was relocated to a sanctuary for "rest"; in reality, he was removed from public view to a mental health facility. He died there three years later. Maximillian's Uncle Peter suffered a "tragic accident" soon after. Some rumors place Maximillian as his uncle's killer, but others suggest that Elector Princess Ludmilla had it done. In any event, Ludmilla showed favoritism towards Maximillian, and his cousins and other relatives did not dare question it or act against him.
Maximillian did not attend university, but was instead tutured at the Royal Palace on Sciuto, only leaving the throneworld of his House to accompany his grandmother to the Celestial Court. When his grandmother finally passed (naturally, most believe), Maximillian immediately declared himself the new Elector Prince and Defender of the Chezun Protectorate. He has ruled the Protectorate since that time.
Maximillian married a young beauty from a minor noble house soon after his ascension, and he and his wife have raised six children. Maximillian also keeps to the old (and now mainly disfavored) tradition of having concubines, who have borne him eight more children. He has declared all of his offspring legitimate heirs and members of the House of Jian.
With the failing health of the emperor, Maximillian Jian has begun making moves that would indicate that he hopes to be considered an candidate for the Iridium Throne when it finally falls vacant. He has increased taxes and tithes on Protectorate worlds to build up a campaign chest of funds to use for the inevitable politicking. He also attempted to raise import duties on all Shogunate ships that travel through Protectorate space, in an effort to weaken House Hidora as a rival. This effort is failing, as Shogunate ships have either found alternate routes or have pushed through with Hidora warships escorting them through Protectorate space. Worse, House Hidora is actively courting several planets of nonhumans to change their allegiances, and their proposals appear to be finding favor. If Maximillian cannot turn his luck around with a brilliant strategem, it appears that his bid for the Imperial Throne will end as his great-grandfather Franklin's did...in failure.
