Mintwood Species in The Fruit of War | World Anvil

Mintwood

Mintwood is an uncommon tree seen throughout Icalar, including in the rocky areas of Balaqalneyis. It is most often seen as a solitary specimen, and its size directly correlates to how many other trees are in the immediate area: if there are any within a ten-foot radius it will not grow to be more than eight feet tall. Its smaller form is referred to as 'dwarf mintwood'.   It is so-named for the minty scent of the oil in its leaves and bark that can be smelt when brushing against it or bruising or breaking its limbs.

Basic Information

Anatomy

Single trunk with forking habit, especially when in dwarf form.

Biological Traits

Produces copious fans of plaque-like dark green leaves. Brown bark forms plaques in straight vertical ridges up and down the trunk.

Ecology and Habitats

Prefers full sun. Its preference for solitary habitats and self-regulating growth is not fully understood, as it is very tolerant of a variety of soils and temperatures; this seems to suggest a sensitivity to the mere presence of other trees in the same manner as crown shyness.
