Biting Clover Species in The Fruit of War | World Anvil

Biting Clover

Biting clover is a biennial herbaceous, carnivorous flowering plant common across Icalar. They attract their prey through color but also a sharp fruity scent. It is often seen with aesrove, and the scents of the two together can often be overpowering but benefits both.

Basic Information

Anatomy

Small clumps of five to ten oval leaves form a tightly-nested dish shape close to the ground; five to ten long flower stems coated in slick nectar sprout from the center of the dish.

Biological Traits

Leaves are pale silver-green. Flowers are on crooked brass-colored stems, and have four 'tongues' surrounding a crest of short petal-like spikes. The flowers range in color from white to yellow and orange.

Ecology and Habitats

Like aesrove, prefers rocky terrain and well-drained soil, but is resilient. Likewise, thrives with aesrove due to the herb attracting horntail locust juveniles.

Dietary Needs and Habits

Carnivorous; primarily insects, but occasionally very small infant mammals. Insects can become trapped in either the nectar of the stems, where they slip down into the tight basin of the leaves to drown and be digested, or fall into the basin itself; they can also be caught by the flowers, which close quickly when their inner spikes are touched and then coil themselves downward into the leaf basin.

Additional Information

Uses, Products & Exploitation

The flowers and occasionally roots are sometimes prepared as a tea or used as an additional flavoring in distills.
