Spike Drive

The spike drive is the most common method of FTL travel used in the galaxy. While not as quick or safe as Jump Gates, spike drives do not require much of the psycho-reactive technology needed to create and run a functional jump gate and are typically the first form of faster than light (FTL) travel that most species discover.

Utility

Spike drives are used to both propel ships through real-time space and to drill into and through metaphysical space.

Social Impact

The discovery of the spike drive typically introduces most species to the greater galactic community.

Access & Availability

Low level spike drives (Level 1 and 2) are readily available in areas with late stage Tech Level 3 or Tech Level 4 capable starports. Higher level drives require more sophisticated manufacturing facilities.

Discovery

The spike drive has been developed separately by various species over the course of history, with humans discovering the technology around 470 P.S. (2230 C.E.). For humans the discovery coincided with the discovery of Metaphysical Space.
