The Motherhood
A cult centred around the idea of rebirth and loyalty and devotion to the family. They also consider all baptized members to be family members and siblings, and thus devotion to the family also means devotion to the church. They do some charitable works in the form of adopting any orphans they can find and inducting them into the church.
Structure
The motherhood is ruled by their leader, The Doula.
By tradition, she considers all inductees to the Motherhood her adoptive sons and daughters. The current head Eun-ji Berger Choi, took her second name from her predecessor, and current members all add the name Choi to theirs as a second name.
Second in command is the Eldest Daughter (sometimes just called 'Eldest'), who effectively runs the day to day of the church. While it is generally accepted that the Eldest daughter will inherit the title of Doula, in some cases, she may choose another to take her place, or the Doula may name an alternate successor,
All other members are known as Children of the Mother.
Culture
Induction into the Motherhood involves a ceremony of metaphorical birth through the Pelvis, lead by the current Doula. They have been known to hold "mass birthing" ceremonies where many people are reborn at the same time.
Tenets of Faith
- One cannot truly enter into the Free City without being washed clean of ALL ties, including that of family, and this rebirthing ceremony effectively makes you a new person, and you enter into the religious family of The Motherhood.
- The pelvis belongs to a being known as the Great Mother Giant, who gave birth to the Free City, and who also chose to come to the city as her final resting place so that she could be closer to her people.
Worship
New members to the Motherhood are inducted via a Ceremony of rebirth, which involves disrobing, and then doing a symbolic and magical birth through the Pelvis, guided by the Doula.
At the conclusion of the ceremony, you may choose a new name. If at the end you truly wish to belong to the Family, you add the last name of your Doula as your second name.
Members are expected tithe 10% of their income to the family-church.
